Hario is a Japanese company founded in 1921 in Tokyo by Hiromasa Shibata — a manufacturer of high-temperature laboratory and kitchenware glass whose name literally translates to "King of Glass" in Japanese (hari = glass, o = king). For over a century, the company has refined its mastery of heat-resistant borosilicate glass, achieving its greatest recognition in the specialty coffee world through the V60 dripper — one of the most iconic pour-over brewing devices in the history of the coffee industry.

A Century of Precision

Hario began as a manufacturer of scientific glassware for laboratories and research institutions. It wasn't until 1948 that the company took its first step into household equipment, launching a siphon coffee maker. Over the following decades, Hario expanded its catalog of coffee and tea equipment, becoming Japan's leading syphon coffeemaker manufacturer by 1967. The real breakthrough came in 2004, when Hario commercially released the V60 dripper — named after the 60-degree angle of the spiral ribs inside the funnel. The product was the result of years of experimentation dating back to the 1980s, when trapezoidal drippers dominated the Japanese market. The V60 changed the game, giving baristas unprecedented control over the extraction process.

V60 Conquers the Specialty Coffee World

The V60's global success came at the 2010 World Barista Championship in London, when Michael Phillips used Hario drippers to claim the title. From that moment on, the V60 became a symbol of specialty coffee worldwide, used by Brewers Cup champions in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017. Today the V60 is available in ceramic, glass, plastic, copper, and metal versions — in various sizes and colors — and is used in over 75 countries. In 2007, Hario received the Japanese Good Design Award for both the plastic and ceramic versions of the dripper. Beyond the V60, Hario's lineup includes servers, gooseneck kettles, burr grinders, syphons, tea presses, and other precision brewing accessories.
