Lodge Cast Iron is an American manufacturer of cast iron cookware and cooking accessories, founded in 1896 by Joseph Lodge in the small town of South Pittsburg, Tennessee. For over 125 years, the brand has continuously produced in the same location — nestled between the Appalachian Mountains and the Tennessee River — delivering cookware that, generation after generation, only gets better with use rather than wearing out. Lodge is the oldest and largest manufacturer of cast iron cookware in the United States, and remains family-owned to this day.

History and Origins

Joseph Lodge arrived in South Pittsburg after decades of traveling on foot across the United States in search of work and a place to settle. This small industrial town on the Tennessee River suited him, and in 1896 he established the Blacklock Foundry, specializing in cast iron cookware. When a fire destroyed the entire foundry in May 1910, Joseph Lodge refused to give up — within just three months, he rebuilt the company a few blocks away under the new name Lodge Manufacturing Company. From that day forward, the plant has never ceased production and continues to operate on the same site, managed by successive generations of the Lodge family.

Innovations and Milestones

In 2002, Lodge revolutionized the cast iron cookware industry: it became the first company in the world to introduce factory seasoning of cast iron with vegetable oil. Previously, buyers had to season their cookware themselves before first use — a tedious and time-consuming process. Lodge automated it and set an industry standard that every manufacturer has since adopted. Another milestone came in 2005 with the introduction of the enameled cast iron line — colorful, elegant cookware combining the performance of cast iron with a practical, easy-to-clean enamel finish. In 2022, Lodge opened its own museum, where visitors can get an up-close look at the brand's history and manufacturing process.

Why Lodge Cast Iron?

Lodge cast iron cookware is renowned for its exceptional heat retention and even heat distribution — properties that aluminum and stainless steel simply cannot match. Cast iron works on gas, electric, and induction cooktops, in the oven, on the grill, and over an open fire — making it indispensable both in the home kitchen and out in the field. The longer you use a Lodge piece, the more seasoned it becomes and the better it performs. Well-maintained cast iron can literally last for generations — many families still cook with skillets passed down from their grandparents and great-grandparents.

Lodge and the Outdoors

Lodge is also well known for its line of camp cookware — cast iron camp kettles, Dutch ovens, and skillets designed for cooking over fire, on the grill, and on camp stoves. The Camp Dutch Oven series is an absolute icon of field cooking, used by overlanders, bushcrafters, and open-air cooking enthusiasts for over a century. Lodge is the first choice for those who believe the best meals are cooked over an open flame.
