PepperBall is an American less-lethal / non-lethal systems manufacturer with over 25 years of experience supplying law enforcement, military, corrections, and security personnel with tools to resolve conflicts without resorting to lethal force. The brand was founded in 1999 as the commercial application of PAVA (Pelargonic Acid Vanillylamide) technology originally developed by defense contractor Jaycor — an irritant agent similar to pepper spray but with more predictable and consistent effects. PepperBall quickly became the most widely deployed less-lethal system in history, now used by over 10,000 law enforcement and military agencies worldwide, including the NYPD, Los Angeles PD, the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Marines.

History and Milestone Deployments

PepperBall technology made its public debut in 1999 during the World Trade Organization riots in Seattle, immediately proving its effectiveness in crowd control. In the years that followed, the system was deployed during the 2002 NCAA basketball tournament riots, the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, and countless individual and large-scale incidents worldwide. A key advantage of PepperBall over other less-lethal systems is standoff distance: projectiles can engage a target at up to 45 meters, giving officers the time and distance that conventional pepper spray simply cannot provide.

Technology and System Operation

The PepperBall system is built around a CO₂-, nitrogen-, or compressed-air-powered launcher firing .68 caliber projectiles filled with PAVA compound. Each round bursts on impact, releasing a cloud of irritant powder with an effective radius of 1 to 3 meters from the point of impact — meaning a direct hit is not required to achieve effect. PAVA causes immediate, intense mucous membrane irritation, tearing, involuntary eye closure, and temporary disorientation, with no lasting side effects. Symptoms fully subside within minutes of exposure to fresh air.

Product Lines

The PepperBall lineup covers launchers across the full size spectrum: from the compact TCP Launcher designed for patrol officers, through the mid-range TAC-PATROL and BLAST launchers, to the full-size TAC-SA PRO and TAC-SA PRO PLUS assault systems used by SWAT units and military forces. The LifeLite series integrates a tactical flashlight and PepperBall launcher in a single device — purpose-built for night patrol operations. The lineup is rounded out by projectiles in multiple variants: standard, marking (target-tagging dye), and extended-range. A civilian product series enables lawful personal defense from a safe standoff distance.

Who PepperBall Is For

PepperBall systems are designed for agencies and personnel that need to resolve conflict situations with the minimum necessary use of force. Patrol officers carry compact launchers as an intermediate-force option between pepper spray and a firearm. Riot control units deploy PepperBall systems for crowd dispersal. Corrections staff manage aggressive inmates without putting personnel at risk. Security firms apply less-lethal solutions for facility protection. In jurisdictions where permitted, civilians can use PepperBall systems for personal defense at a safe distance.
