Sigg
Sigg is a Swiss drinking bottle brand with over 110 years of history, founded in 1908 by Ferdinand Sigg in Biel, Switzerland. Officially known as SIGG Switzerland Bottles AG, the company is a global leader in aluminum water bottles — products that entered the permanent collection of the New York Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in 1993 as a classic example of industrial design. SIGG bottles combine Swiss precision, durability, environmental responsibility, and minimalist design that has remained relevant for over a century. "Swiss Made" on a SIGG bottle is more than a geographic label — it's a promise of quality.
History — from metalworking to design icon
Ferdinand Sigg, a metalworking specialist, returned to Switzerland after years of training and travel to co-found an aluminum goods manufacturing facility in 1908 alongside Xaver Küng. From the outset, Küng, Sigg & Cie produced bottles, mess tins, and aluminum cookware — a material that proved to be ahead of its time: lightweight, tough, and corrosion-resistant. Just one year after production began, the company employed 30 people, and continued success drove repeated expansions.
In 1920, Sigg introduced the iconic cylindrical aluminum bottle, which has been produced in various configurations ever since. The bottle gained popularity among alpinists and mountain hikers, and found its way into Balkan and Middle Eastern military forces — with Sigg supplying field mess equipment. In the 1980s and 1990s, as environmental awareness grew, SIGG aluminum bottles became a symbol of the responsible alternative to single-use plastic. The bottle entered the MoMA collection in 1993. In 2016, the company was acquired by Chinese manufacturer Haers Vacuum Containers; aluminum bottles continue to be produced in Frauenfeld, Switzerland.
Products and technologies
SIGG bottles are available in three materials: aluminum (the classic Swiss line from Frauenfeld), 18/8 stainless steel, and glass. Aluminum bottles are impact-extruded from a single piece of aluminum — seamless and joint-free, eliminating potential leak points and making the bottle exceptionally durable. The interior is coated with a proprietary Cool Lip lining that protects the aluminum from corrosion and ensures the contents taste neutral. The bottles are leak-proof, impact-resistant, and BPA-free food-safe.
SIGG also produces stainless steel vacuum flasks that keep beverages at temperature for hours, children's bottles with safe valves and spouts, and thermal mugs. All SIGG cap and closure systems share a standardized thread, allowing full interchangeability across models. Limited editions and artist collections are an annual tradition that draws SIGG collectors from around the world.
