How to choose boxing gloves? - a beginner's guide

Boxing is a demanding sport that puts a lot of strain on the hands and wrists. For this reason, properly fitted boxing gloves are not only a question of comfort, but above all of safety. Improperly fitting gloves can cause painful injuries that prevent further training.

In this guide, you will learn how to choose boxing gloves depending on your intended use and training goal. We will also give you tips on how to measure boxing gloves.

Boxing glove sizes - what to consider when buying?

The correct choice of boxing glove size is important not only for comfort, but above all for safety and effectiveness during training. Well-chosen gloves protect the hands from injury, provide adequate cushioning of punches and influence the development of boxing technique.

When choosing a boxing glove size, the first thing you may come across is the term "oz", which is the number of ounces and therefore the weight of a particular model. Such a system has been used for years by almost all manufacturers worldwide, with one ounce equals approximately 28 grams. It is worth noting that the number of ounces does not equate to the size of the gloves, but does affect their purpose and the protection offered. In this case, what will the size of boxing gloves depend on?

The size of a boxing glove is determined primarily by the filling of the, mostly foam, which is responsible for weight and cushioning. With lighter models (6-10 ounces), the difference in the size of the liner is more pronounced, which means that the weight affects the size. In contrast, with gloves weighing more than 10 ounces, the differences are negligible and weight does not determine the size. It is a mistake to say that the heavier the gloves, the larger the size - only the larger outer volume is noticeable.

There is a standard among the vast majority of boxing glove manufacturers. You can check how to size your boxing gloves in the table below:

Glove weight (oz) Purpose
4 oz - 6 oz Technical training
8 oz Technical training
10 oz - 12 oz Technical training, instruments
14 oz and heavier Sparring

In the remainder of this guide, we will outline important criteria to consider when choosing a boxing glove size. Remember, however, that these are only suggestions and general guidelines. The most important thing is, of course, the comfort and individual feel of the gloves in question.

Purpose of boxing gloves vs. size

When it comes to choosing boxing gloves, the intended use is very important. Different types of training require gloves with different specifications.

For sparring, choose big and heavy gloves with a thicker strike zone, as this will also affect the safety of your sparring partner. It will also be more beneficial for you, as it is easier to hide behind such gloves when blocking punches. Opt for gloves 14 oz or 16 oz (if you hit hard, have large hands or weigh more than 80 kilograms).

Lighter gloves will be better for technical training with thinner padding for better dynamics, precision and impact control. For example, you can choose gloves 12 oz, this size is commonly used for bag exercises and general training.

Size of gloves for a boxer vs. training goal

The choice of gloves should be tailored to the specifics of your training to maximise its effectiveness. Do you want to build strength and conditioning or focus on speed and dynamics?

  • Strength endurance and conditioning: choose heavy gloves (12 oz or more), even when training on instruments. Increased resistance will help build strength and capacity.
  • Speed and dynamism: use lighter gloves (e.g. 10 oz). The lighter weight will facilitate faster and more dynamic strikes.

We also advise that when choosing boxing gloves for beginners, these tips should be suggested:

  • Gloves 10 oz – if you need gloves for exercising on equipment at home (e.g. a boxing bag).
  • Gloves 12 oz – if you are starting to train at a club and will be using the gloves for training on instruments as well as for training with a partner.

How do you measure boxing gloves?

Before buying boxing gloves, it is always a good idea to try them on to make sure they fit your hand and are comfortable. It is not necessary to do so, but you can measure your hand to get the right size gloves. How do you measure boxing gloves?

  • Measure the circumference of the dominant hand around the knuckles with a tape measure.
  • Compare the result in inches or centimetres with the size chart available from your retailer.
  • Find the size that corresponds to your hand circumference. For example, a circumference of 9 inches usually corresponds to a medium size.
