Cold Steel Mini Tac Bowie 8Cr13MoV Knife

A lightweight, fixed-blade knife featuring a Full Tang construction, crafted by esteemed knife designer Andrew Demko, suited for everyday carry (EDC) as well as outdoor adventures. Equipped with a Bowie-style blade manufactured from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, and black handle scales composed of Griv-Ex material for a textured, non-slip grip, ensuring dependable and comfortable handling. The package comes with a sheath utilizing the Secure-Ex system and a ball chain, allowing for convenient neck carry.

8Cr13MoV stainless steel

Forged from 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, the blade delivers an optimal balance of edge retention, corrosion resistance, and low-maintenance care. Thanks to advanced heat treatment, the blade reaches a hardness of 58-60 HRC, providing reliable strength and performance during demanding use.

Bowie profile blade

Measuring 92 mm in length and 2.5 mm in thickness, the blade features a Bowie profile. A smooth cutting edge combined with a high flat grind delivers superior slicing performance without sacrificing penetration capability. Finished with the bead blasting method, the blade boasts a matte surface that reduces reflections and enhances resistance to scratches.

Full Tang construction, ergonomic Griv-Ex grip

Featuring Full Tang construction, the knife handle integrates the steel tang along its entire length, ensuring superior strength and stability. The tang is fitted with scales crafted from Griv-Ex material, a robust, fiberglass-reinforced composite. A non-slip grip enhanced by pronounced finger grooves and prominent jimping on the blade spine delivers outstanding control, even in wet or grimy conditions. A small steel cross guard further secures the hand, preventing accidental contact with the cutting edge.

Secure-Ex system sheath, neck carry chain

The included sheath, designed in the Secure-Ex system, features a lightweight, robust, and weather-resistant construction. Multiple holes are integrated for versatile cord attachment. Secure retention ensures the knife stays firmly in place, minimizing the risk of accidental drops. By utilizing the supplied ball chain, the knife may be worn around the neck, offering practical comfort and accessibility for everyday carry.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
8Cr13MoV (8Cr13) feature
8Cr13MoV (8Cr13)
8Cr13MoV (8Cr13) is a Chinese stainless steel equivalent to Japanese AUS-8 steel. It offers a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (approximately 0.8%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Additions of molybdenum (0.3%), vanadium (up to 0.2%), manganese (0.5%), and silicon (0.4%) improve abrasion resistance and the stability of the steel structure. 8Cr13MoV is often used in the production of knives, including by companies such as Spyderco and Benchmade, which manufacture in China. After proper heat treatment, 8Cr13MoV steel achieves a hardness of 56-58 HRC, which makes it a material with good cutting properties, easy to sharpen, and relatively resistant to wear.
Bead Blast feature
Bead Blast
Bead Blast is a blade finishing technique that involves treating steel with a stream of fine ceramic or glass beads under high pressure. It gives the surface a uniform matte, satin-gray appearance without any light reflections. The surface obtained in the sandblasting process is smooth and aesthetic, but due to micro-pores, it may be slightly more susceptible to wear and corrosion if the blade is not properly protected. Nevertheless, Bead Blast is valued for its simplicity, discretion, and masking properties, which is why it is used in EDC, outdoor, and military knives.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

Excellent neck knife from Cold Steel. For really fair money, you get a great small knife made of good steel to wear around your neck. Worth every penny spent.

Another nice little knife from Cold Steel - a blade with an interesting shape and a nicely contoured grip. As a neck knife, it's probably more suitable for outdoor occasions (camping, forest walks), because it might be a bit too big for daily wear around the neck.

Factory sharpened decently 3/5, very nice sheath, looks badass. On the downside, the handle should be about 2 cm longer. Overall, a neck knife worth recommending.

I bought this knife as a pair with the MINI TAC-FAUX TANTO I bought earlier, made of the same steel. The Tanto is like a small cleaver and the Bowie is an aggressive little one. The sheath and the knife both get a 5, as expected from Cold Steel.

Sharp, solid, and handy. The quality of this knife pleasantly surprised me.

The plastic handle scales move during heavier use. The grip is very secure but less comfortable than a typical handle; works well even in thick gloves.

    Great tip, nice grip.

Awesome! Good grip, sharp, and the sheath holds tightly. I recommend it!

Surprisingly ergonomic, fits great in the hand. A bit too big to wear on a chain, but fine in a pocket.

For a handle of this length, I have to say it feels really secure. The steel, although not top-tier, is well hardened, and the sheath is standard Cold Steel quality—hard to find better.
