What did you do to be alive when so many died there?
1947, Brooklyn. Sophia - the beautiful, gentle daughter of a Polish anti-Semite and a former prisoner of the Auschwitz concentration camp is unable to deal with the demons of the past. Her lover, Natan - a Jewish intellectual and schizophrenic, lives with an obsessive desire to retaliate for war crimes. Stingo, an aspiring writer and their neighbor experiences a fascination with both of them, falls endlessly in love with Sophie and becomes a confidant of her hidden camp experiences. Sophie, unable to come to terms with the choice she made behind the wires of Auschwitz, has to choose again - this time to save herself.
Can a person understand the hell of the Nazi concentration camps if he has not experienced it?
