Much of the knowledge in this book is still relevant. A very nice read, enjoyable. You can immerse yourself into the world of bushcraft and survival pioneers.
Horace Kephart enjoyed a stable family life, an outstanding education, years of a steadily progressing career, a role as director at one of America’s largest libraries, a noteworthy collection of rare volumes, and recognition as an authority in his field. Yet, at age 42 in 1904, he set aside all that security to reside alone in a deserted mountain cabin, devoting the rest of his days to the unadorned, rugged routine of a woodsman.
The second installment of the Book of Traditional Camping presents camping through a more untamed lens. The wild doesn’t teach which mistakes to avoid at the shop—it shows how to prevent them in the wilderness. Guidance isn’t about what shoes to purchase, but how to traverse the forest in them. Rather than focusing on brands of compasses, the book covers skills such as navigating by stars and moss; instead of inventories of handy tools, there are detailed lists of tree species and their practical applications; instead of a provision checklist, there's a register of edible wild plants.
Volume two delves into the challenge of harnessing nature’s resources through self-reliance, exploring a realm that is demanding and often unfamiliar. Readers will find vivid descriptions of insects inhabiting wild areas as well as unfiltered insights into the gritty details of tasks like tanning hides by hand, making fibers from animal tendons and viscera, or splinting fractures and applying other emergency lifesaving measures when civilization is distant and moments matter.

A classic, so it's hard to add something meaningful and unique. A source of inspiration and knowledge, a return to a bygone world, without overly idealizing it. The second volume seems more interesting and practical than the first, because it concerns the essence of the trapper’s life, but the first is also worth reading (even if you are not interested in product and company advertisements from a hundred years ago, although it's an interesting comparative material as well).
-
Great book on traditional camping. Better than the first part because there are much more practical tips instead of just dry theory. Very useful for bushcraft.
-
As described, 100%. The second volume takes the reader straight into the wild. It teaches how to use and rely on one’s instincts and will to survive. Chapters discuss the usefulness and types of trees, edible and medicinal plants, and first aid when there’s no outside help. Simply a revelation. I recommend and encourage you to read it.

A bible for both amateur and experienced outdoorsmen. Lots of tips and tricks from Kephart himself.
