"Wandering with Nessmuk" is a collection of George Sears’ stories about his travels in the wild Adirondacks. The book presents the nature, tourism, and exploitation problems, making it a read for bushcraft enthusiasts.
At the close of the 19th century, seasoned explorer George Sears, better known as "Nessmuk," pens a collection of travelogues chronicling the untouched wilderness of the Adirondack Mountains. Employing a lively and engaging tone, captivating anecdotes, and deep reverence for nature, he quickly amasses a dedicated following. His narrative follows a path through remote territories, uncharted lakes, vast woodlands, and isolated summits. Offering an intimate encounter with the world of forest expeditions in the American East, his journey brings the call of adventure close to home.
While the West remains untamed, the Eastern regions present contemporary challenges that ring familiar today: waves of tourists, nature being commercialized, environmental destruction, and the relentless exploitation of natural treasures amid one of the final strongholds of wilderness. Travels with Nessmuk stand as a chronicle of a bygone era and a reflection of our enduring human traits.
An essential volume for devoted followers of Nessmuk, outdoor survival and wilderness exploration enthusiasts, and anyone who cherishes the raw beauty of untamed natural landscapes.

Great book. I had a lot of fun reading it. Rufus managed to convey the atmosphere of those times, which I suspect was not easy. In my opinion, a must-read!
-
Another Nessmuk book from The Old Wonderful World publishing house. Rufus did a great job... and now I have something to read before bed. A little more and I’ll have the whole collection on my shelf.
-
I was missing something in this book, but it was quite decent and will appeal to many people. A lot of knowledge and an interesting journey through time, though it felt unfinished.

Reading this book in a hammock is pure pleasure!
-
To quote the classic: "firecracker." Especially for hammocks.
-
I recommend it. Pleasant to read.
-
The book is quite enjoyable. I wasn't bored while reading it.

I bought it encouraged by Woodcraft, but unfortunately this book is just a cash grab. A collection of newspaper articles is not a book. The author's wilderness journeys start at a tannery, then move to rotting forests flooded by humans, and finally end on commercially developed lake shores. Suffice it to say that in this "wilderness" the author collided with another boat and crossed larger lakes on regularly scheduled steamboats.

The perfect complement to Nessmuk's Woodcraft from The Old Wonderful World. Very enjoyable to read.

Nessmuk’s Forest Wanderings in Rufus’s amazing translation. You must know it and you must read it.
