Daniel Carter Beard (born June 21, 1850, in the United States, passed away June 11, 1941) was fondly known as "Uncle Dan" among his peers. Renowned as an author, illustrator, and an exemplary figure for young people, he established the "Sons of Daniel Boone" organization in 1905. This group would later unite with the largest scouting movement in America, the Boy Scouts of America.

During his childhood, he ventured into wild forests and captured the beauty of nature through his drawings. Initially working as an engineer and surveyor, Beard eventually wrote articles on scouting, outdoor skills, craftsmanship, and building techniques for various magazines. He lent his artistic talents to the works of writers such as Mark Twain and Ernest Crosby. His contributions to the scouting community gained recognition across all American scout organizations, and numerous permanent scout camps bear his name. Beard's life came to a close on June 11, 1941, at his residence in Brooklands, Suffern, New York.

"Camp Lore and Woodcraft" holds a prominent place in the collection of anyone who values the wisdom and practical experience of Uncle Dan. Packed with core insights for expedition preparation and featuring invaluable advice for navigating the outdoors, it covers essentials such as what and how to pack, fire-building, camp kitchen setup, utensil preparation, meal planning, ax handling, and campsite selection. The author complements his instructions with exceptional sketches and insightful analogies. Readers are drawn into his journeys, portrayed with a deep affection for the wilderness, respect for nature, and the pleasure of living beneath the open sky.

Written for young boys at a time when they possessed greater independence and skills than most adults today, this volume encourages readers to reclaim lost expertise. Readers are invited to become proficient explorers of forests, mountains, and regions rich with lakes. Acquired skills may one day prove to be not only useful but essential in real-life situations.

An interesting guide for people interested in traditional camping. I had the impression it was written for scouts from 100 years ago. Beautiful illustrations that show more than a thousand words. A great gift for a scout.

The book seemed interesting, but unfortunately the content is meant for complete beginners. If you have never had contact with forests or the countryside, you won't be disappointed. If you already know the basics, skip this read.

Worth reading. I don't know how much of it you can actually use in Poland, but who knows. It was definitely relevant for pioneers, and could be a fascinating read for young scouting enthusiasts, scouts, and those into the now trendy survival (whatever that means).

A must-have for anyone interested not only in forest camping.
