A commitment deserving to be etched in gold within the chronicles of history.
Extensive literature surrounds the January Uprising—from diaries and scattered recollections to comprehensive multi-volume works. Nonetheless, the stories of those who traveled from distant lands to confront the tsar’s empire in pursuit of Poland’s independence are rarely illuminated.
These ranks included individuals from numerous nations: Italians, French, Hungarians, Russians, Ukrainians, Swedes, Germans, Serbs, and Croats. Forsaking security and comfort, they stood shoulder to shoulder with Poles in the battle for the Republic’s liberty.
Foreign volunteers took on a vital role during the January Uprising. Portraits presented here showcase the most dedicated among them—individuals whose legacy must not be consigned to oblivion.
