Cold Steel Damascus Long Sax Sword

Single-edged, elongated blade influenced by 10th-11th century artifacts from the British Isles unearthed at the archaeological sites of Battersea and Sittingbourne. The term seax (or sax) translates to knife in Old English. Favored as a weapon from the Migration Period through to the close of the 11th century, the seax was especially common among Germanic tribes and in southern England.

Blade with a broken-back profile made from pattern-welded Damascus

Archaeologists refer to the profile of the single-edged blade as broken-back, resembling the modern Clip-Point style. Crafted from pattern-welded Damascus steel, the blade incorporates layers of both hard and soft high-carbon steel, resulting in impressive edge retention and impact resistance, which significantly boost its performance as a weapon. Positioned above the cross guard is a ricasso (blunt edge) for improved control. The blade itself measures 438 mm in length and 7 mm in thickness, with the surface treated using acid etching to highlight the unique Damascus pattern. Final refinement of the blade involved polishing and sharpening to achieve its finished state.

Sword mount handle, rosewood grip, steel pommel, saddle-shaped cross guard

Featuring a 165 mm long handle, the grip is crafted from tapered rosewood for both comfort and control. The short, saddle-shaped cross guard—reminiscent of early medieval swords and combat knives—serves to keep the hand securely away from the blade. According to Petersen's typology, a steel, three-piece pommel of type Z counterbalances the blade. Each component of the handle is adorned with ornamental steel and brass spacers. A distinctive touch is the twisted wire chain soldered between the pommel’s segments.

Leather sheath with brass fittings, two rings for threading a strap

Included in the set is a sheath crafted from natural leather with brass, featuring elaborately decorated fittings. Two sturdy brass rings, securely riveted, provide options for threading a strap and fastening the knife to a belt.

Damascus steel is a composite material created by combining multiple layers of different types of steel with varying properties. Repeated forging and welding creates a structure with high strength, flexibility, and hardness. Layers with a higher carbon content are responsible for the sharpness and durability of the edges, while nickel alloy steel increases corrosion resistance and provides a contrasting pattern. After etching the surface, a unique, wavy pattern characteristic of each piece is revealed. Thanks to its combination of functional and aesthetic properties, Damascus steel is used in premium knives, bladed weapons, and collector's knives.
