Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII CPM 3V Fixed Blade Knife

A knife with a fixed blade measuring 304 mm in length and a Tanto profile, made of durable and damage-resistant CPM 3V powder steel. The handle, featuring a non-slip texture, is made of Kray-Ex material. The set includes a Secure-Ex sheath with holes and grommets for multi-position attachment to a belt or other gear. The knife was designed with the most demanding users in mind and manufactured with attention to detail using the best materials available on the market.

CPM 3V powder steel

The knife blade is made of CPM 3V steel, produced using the powder sintering method. This steel is characterized by exceptional strength and toughness, while also offering wear resistance comparable to that of high-speed steel used in the manufacture of drill bits and end mills. It is not stainless steel, but it exhibits good corrosion resistance with basic maintenance. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58–61 HRC, combining strength, durability, and ease of sharpening.

Tanto blade profile

The knife features a Tanto-profile blade that is 304 mm long and 5 mm thick. The smooth blade features a gently hollow grind, which ensures excellent cutting performance. The blade tip is strong enough to handle even the hardest materials, yet sharp enough to excel at tasks requiring precision. The curved cutting edge along its entire length increases efficiency when cutting, chopping, or splitting.

Kray-Ex handle

The handle is constructed from Kray-Ex material, offering high resistance to mechanical wear and environmental influences. A textured, non-slip surface guarantees a secure and reliable grip in all conditions. The double-sided cross guard effectively shields the hand, preventing accidental contact with the blade. At the end of the handle, a robust steel pommel features a lanyard hole, allowing the attachment of a safety cord.

Secure-Ex sheath

The sheath is made using the Secure-Ex system from weather-resistant plastic. The sheath holds the knife securely in place thanks to its custom-fit opening and snap-fastened loop, which reduces the risk of the knife accidentally falling out. The loop makes it easy to attach to a belt, and numerous holes and grommets allow for multi-position mounting to other pieces of gear as well.

Cold Steel is a respected American brand of knives, machetes, and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which provides high durability and wear resistance. Cold Steel patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand works with respected knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko, whose passion and experience contribute to the high quality of the products.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
CPM 3V feature
CPM 3V
CPM 3V is a premium powder tool steel produced by Crucible Industries, known for its high resistance to impact, fracture, and wear. It contains 0.8% carbon, 7.5% chromium, and additions of molybdenum (1.3%), vanadium (2.75%), manganese (up to 1%), and silicon (up to 1%) additives, which improve wear resistance and structural stability. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, providing a balance between strength, durability, and ease of sharpening. Although CPM 3V is not stainless steel, it offers good corrosion resistance and is widely used in the manufacture of military, survival, and hunting knives. It is suitable for intensive use in harsh conditions, combining high wear resistance, better ductility, and longer edge retention compared to other tool steels.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.
