Cold Steel Magnum Tanto XII VG-10 San Mai Fixed Blade Knife

A tactical knife featuring a Full Tang construction, designed in the tradition of the iconic Japanese Wakizashi swords. Outfitted with a Tanto-style blade crafted from VG-10 San Mai laminated steel, the knife offers exceptional resistance to corrosion and edge wear. The blade is finished with a satin polish. The black handle utilizes Kray-Ex material and is textured to provide a secure, non-slip grip. Included in the set is a sheath with the Secure-Ex system, ensuring convenient attachment to a belt or integration with other gear.

Laminated San Mai steel

Crafted from San Mai laminated stainless steel engineered by Cold Steel, the blade merges outstanding edge retention with superior flexibility and corrosion resistance, thanks to its three-layer build. At its core is high-performance VG-10 steel, which, following precise heat treatment, reaches a hardness of 59–61 HRC, ensuring excellent cutting edge durability. The multi-layer construction renders the tool highly resistant to damage, exceptionally durable, and simple to maintain.

Tanto profile blade, satin finish

The blade features a Tanto profile and measures 305 mm in length with a thickness of 5 mm. Designed with a clean cutting edge and a semi-flat grind, the blade includes a robust, reinforced tip where the full spine thickness extends nearly to the end. Such a construction guarantees exceptional durability, making it suitable for handling the toughest tasks. A satin finish delivers a semi-matte look, elevates visual appeal, and provides greater resistance to scratches during use.

Handle made of Kray-Ex with a non-slip texture

Crafted from sturdy Kray-Ex material, the black handle features a deeply textured surface that ensures a firm hold in tough conditions, even when hands are wet or dirty. Designed with a Full Tang construction, the tang extends the entire length of the handle and is just slightly narrower than the handle itself. A disk-shaped cross guard effectively stops fingers from sliding forward onto the blade. The handle concludes with a robust steel pommel, which can be utilized as a glass breaker or an emergency tool in the field. A hole in the handle also provides an option for attaching a lanyard or securing strap.

Secure-Ex sheath

The set features a holster crafted using the Secure-Ex system, constructed from lightweight yet robust plastic engineered to withstand harsh environmental conditions. A precisely contoured inlet and a loop with a snap closure ensure the knife remains securely in place, effectively preventing accidental ejection. Designed for ease of attachment to a belt, the sheath also incorporates strategically positioned holes and grommets around the holster, enabling versatile, multi-angle mounting options to suit user preferences.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
San Mai feature
San Mai
San Mai (ja. "three layers") is a three-layer steel laminate developed by Cold Steel, combining a hard, high-carbon core with outer layers of stainless steel that offer high flexibility and corrosion resistance. The outer layers protect the core from damage, increase the blade's impact resistance, and facilitate maintenance. Depending on the generation, Cold Steel has used different core steels: VG-1 (San Mai III), containing 0.95-1.05% carbon and 13-15% chromium, characterized by good edge retention and rust resistance, and VG-10, enriched with molybdenum (0.9-1.2%) and vanadium (0.2-0.3%), which improves hardness, abrasion resistance, and edge retention. After proper heat treatment, the core reaches a hardness of 59-61 HRC. Products with a VG-1 San Mai core are manufactured in Japan in limited editions and are used in Cold Steel's most exclusive collector's fixed knives. VG-10 San Mai is produced in small series and is used exclusively in top-of-the-line collector's knives. San Mai is a registered trademark of Cold Steel.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Great knife, cuts and chops well. Thanks to the San Mai construction method (which gives it a soft spine), it can withstand more than many machetes. It also works well as a wall decoration—it's a pleasure to look at such a weapon. The cutting edge keeps its sharpness well. It's an ideal knife to start your adventure with the Japanese type of weapons, but I recommend it to people who already have some experience with weapons, know what they are doing, and will use it appropriately (this is not a toy!).
