Cold Steel Mini Recon 1 Clip-Point Folding Knife AUS-10A

A compact adaptation of one of Cold Steel's most renowned and robust tactical knives, the Recon 1. Engineered as a folding knife for both everyday carry (EDC) and tactical scenarios. The blade, featuring a Clip-Point profile, is crafted from Japanese AUS-10A steel known for its high level of corrosion resistance. Finished with a Stonewash coating, the blade acquires a matte appearance that effectively minimizes glare. The black handle is constructed from fibreglass-reinforced nylon and sports a non-slip texture for a secure grip. Opening is facilitated by a double-sided thumb stud, while the Tri-Ad Lock mechanism guarantees reliable and safe operation. A springy clip provides practical, everyday carrying convenience.

AUS10A stainless steel

Forged from Japanese AUS-10A steel, the blade stands out for its exceptional durability and impressive resistance to both corrosion and wear. Once hardened, the blade reaches a hardness of 58-61 HRC.

clip-point blade with stonewash finish

Featuring a Clip-Point profile, the blade measures 76 mm in length and 3 mm in thickness. The design incorporates a smooth edge produced through a hollow grind. Such blade geometry ensures exceptional cutting performance while preserving solid durability, making the knife suitable for more demanding tasks. A Stonewash finish gives the blade a matte surface, minimizing glare and boosting resistance to scratches.

Nylon handle, steel clip

Robust handle scales crafted from fibreglass-reinforced nylon (GRN) deliver reliable durability and, with their non-slip surface, provide a stable, secure hold. Finger grooves offer superior control over the tool’s movement, even when hands are wet or dirty. The addition of jimping (notching) along the spine of the handle creates a solid thumb rest, enabling greater control of the blade during precision cutting tasks.

A springy clip attached to the handle makes everyday carry convenient, allowing the knife to be fastened to a belt or pocket edge. The clip’s reversible design caters to both right- and left-handed users. A hole for threading a cord is integrated into the end of the handle.

Double-sided thumb stud, Tri-Ad Lock

Once deployed, the blade is secured by the Tri-Ad Lock system, an enhanced take on the traditional Back Lock, renowned for its exceptional strength and reliability among folding knife mechanisms. A double-sided thumb stud allows for fast, single-handed blade deployment using the thumb.

AUS-10 feature
AUS-10
AUS-10 is a high-quality stainless steel produced by the Japanese company Aichi Steel, considered one of the best in the AUS steel series, used mainly in mid-range and high-end utility knives, produced mainly in Japan and Taiwan. The carbon content (0.95-1.1%) ensures high hardness, while chromium (13-14.5%) guarantees very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. The steel also contains manganese (up to 1%), silicon (up to 1%), phosphorus (up to 0.025%), and sulfur (up to 0.025%), which affect hardenability, impact strength, elasticity, and machinability, improving structural stability and maintaining mechanical properties. After hardening, the steel achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, offering an excellent balance between strength, edge retention, and ease of sharpening. It is comparable to 440C steel, differing in carbon content and the addition of vanadium, which improves structural homogeneity and increases abrasion resistance.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
GRN - Glass Reinforced Nylon feature
GRN - Glass Reinforced Nylon
GRN (Glass Reinforced Nylon) is a glass fiber reinforced nylon that is lightweight, highly durable, and resistant to moisture and many chemicals. The material performs well in demanding conditions, maintaining its durability even under intensive use. The surface of GRN can be completely smooth or covered with a texture that improves grip, which translates into better control and ergonomics. The robustness of GRN handles has made this material the standard in the production of EDC (Everyday Carry) knives, as well as in lightweight tactical designs.
Stonewash feature
Stonewash
Stonewash is a blade finishing technique that involves treating steel in a drum filled with stones, ceramic abrasives, or beads. The impact of the material creates a characteristic, irregular pattern with micro-scratches, giving the effect of a matte, slightly “aged” surface with a raw, practical appearance. The finish gives the knife an aesthetic look and masks minor scratches and marks that occur during use, keeping the blade looking like new for longer. The matte texture reduces light reflections, which is valued in tactical and outdoor knives, and the micro-scratches can further reduce friction during cutting. Due to its durability, discreet appearance, and ease of maintenance, stonewash is popular in EDC, field, and tactical knives.

A smaller model of the full-size version. It's a pity that the manufacturer did not use steel liners in the handle design, but considering the goal of minimizing weight, this makes sense. AUS-10 steel is practically AUS-8. There is no difference in everyday use, but marketing does its thing. The handle's texturing could be more aggressive, although the knife is unlikely to slip out of a dry hand. The project is well-thought-out in terms of reducing the dimensions of the larger version, which we also see among some competing knife manufacturers (including Spyderco). The proportions are appropriate. If you're thinking about growing your collection, I can wholeheartedly recommend it.

A compact, small folding knife with a good lock and reserve power when you need it. A really nice option when you don't need a large blade to get the job done. I recommend it.
