Gregory Mountain Products is an American pack brand founded in 1977 by Wayne Gregory in San Diego, built on one simple yet revolutionary philosophy: a pack should be worn, not hauled. Gregory designed his first pack at age 14 for scouting because he couldn't afford to buy one ready-made. That original motivation — building gear that truly fits the human body — drove decades of innovation and established the brand as one of the most important names in the history of outdoor pack design.

Wayne Gregory and the Fit Revolution

Wayne Gregory started out working at a local outdoor shop, where he watched existing external-frame packs fall short of what users actually needed. In 1973 he dissolved his first company and spent several years as an independent designer for brands including Alpenlite, Gerry Outdoors, and Snow Lion, gaining invaluable experience across a wide range of pack construction approaches. In 1977 he opened his own outdoor shop and began building internal-frame packs in the back room — a format that was still a novelty at the time. He developed the Gregory Active Suspension system, which for the first time allowed a pack to move with the user's body rather than against it. In 1983 the brand released the Superlight line featuring a 22-layer graphite composite frame — half the weight of standard aluminum designs. In 1999, Gregory secured a contract to supply packs for the US Special Forces SPEAR system, a milestone that confirmed the brand had earned the highest military credentials.

Fit and Ergonomic Innovation

Gregory was the first pack brand to offer multiple torso lengths and dedicated women's fits — a genuine breakthrough in an industry that had assumed for decades that one pack fits everyone. The brand recognizes that two people of identical height can have very different torso lengths and require different back panel sizes, shoulder harnesses, and hipbelts. Successive generations of suspension systems refined load transfer points, back-contact geometry, and dynamic adjustment, making it possible to carry very heavy loads for hours on end without accumulating fatigue. In recent years the brand has expanded its range to include plus-size models with extended shoulder straps and hipbelts, addressing the needs of users whose body types had previously been underserved.

Who Gregory Packs Are Built For

Gregory packs are the choice of trekkers, alpinists, high-altitude mountaineers, soldiers, and anyone who spends long hours moving under a heavy load. The Baltoro series is an icon of long-distance mountain expeditions, the Deva and Jade are optimized women's trekking platforms, and the Detour and Border models bridge outdoor functionality with everyday carry and travel use. Many Gregory users come to the brand after bad experiences with other packs that caused pain, chafing, or poor load transfer — the precision fit Gregory delivers solves problems that other brands have never been able to eliminate.
