Leapers (UTG) is an American manufacturer of optics and shooting and hunting accessories, founded in 1992 by David and Tina Ding — former police officers from Taiwan who, after studying in the US and working in corporate America, decided to pursue their dream of building their own business. They started literally out of a garage with a single product — a 4x28 compact scope. Today, Leapers is a global company headquartered in Livonia, Michigan, with a recognized manufacturing hub and its own modern 100-yard indoor range.
History and the Road to Success
David and Tina Ding served for 10 years as police officers in Taiwan before coming to the US in 1984 to continue their education. A position at Ford Motor Company gave them invaluable experience in quality management and manufacturing processes. In 1992, they channeled that expertise into their own venture — Leapers. Their strategy focused on horizontal integration in the first 15 years — building out the broadest possible accessories catalog — followed by vertical integration, taking full control of the process from design to delivery. In 1997, Leapers exhibited at SHOT Show for the first time; in 2009, they opened the UTG PRO manufacturing facility in Michigan; and in 2021, they completed their own 100-yard indoor range.
