A katana is a single-edged Japanese white weapon with a curved head at least 60 cm long and a beveled hilt (kissaki). Technically, it is a saber (curved and single-edged head). In English, the term sword is commonly used to refer to any type of edged weapon that has a long head embedded in the handle, which is why the naming of the katana in English as a japanese sword or samurai sword has popularized the phrase "Japanese sword" or "samurai sword" in Polish translations, despite the fact that due to its construction the katana is not a sword.
Japanese swords have undergone evolution over the years, samurai swords in the form we now associate with katanas were created during the Edo period (1603-1868). During this period, the production of katanas was systematized, and a law was created to regulate the ways of carrying and using the weapon. The katana was worn with everyday clothing, threaded through the belt (kaku-obi) with the sharp side of the blade upward. Traditional katanas were produced until March 28, 1876, when the Meiji government issued an edict banning Japanese samurai from carrying weapons known as daishō (a set of two swords - a short wakizashi or tanto and a long katana or tachi). No traditional katana sword was produced until 1933.
