ASG tuning - how to increase the range and power of the replica?
Almost every ASG player at some point considers tuning their replica. This is mainly due to three reasons: increasing demands on the performance of their equipment (especially range, power, and rate of fire), average quality parts used by the manufacturer in the factory replica, and wear and tear of replica components after prolonged and intensive use.
Tuning an ASG replica can involve many changes — from replacing the barrel or battery to modifications within the gearbox. In this article, we discuss whether it is worth making modifications to an ASG replica and what changes can be implemented.
Is it worth tuning an ASG replica?
Many beginner ASG players consider tuning their replica right after purchase. This is a perfectly understandable approach, but it is advisable to first spend some time getting to know the new equipment in combat conditions. It should be remembered that different types of gameplay may require different modifications, and tuning often involves considerable costs, as discussed later in the article. Therefore, instead of hastily investing in modifications that may turn out to be ill-suited, it's better to first thoroughly understand your needs and preferences during actual gameplay.
The most sensible approach is to first intensively use the factory version of the replica. Over time, you will determine if you indeed need enhancements. Replacing some basic parts, such as the Hop-Up rubber or battery, can provide noticeable benefits at relatively low cost. However, more advanced tuning, especially engine modifications, is a much bigger investment. Although they can improve the replica's parameters, the cost-to-benefit ratio often turns out to be less favorable.
ASG Tuning — what modifications can be applied and what can be achieved?
If you are just starting your journey with ASG tuning, it's a good idea to begin with simpler modifications, such as replacing the Hop-Up rubber, barrel, or battery. Replacing these components is relatively easy and inexpensive, and usually results in great improvements in replica performance. On the other hand, if the replica still does not meet your expectations, you can gradually move on to more advanced tuning, including gearbox components, as you gain experience.
Replacing the factory barrel with a precision barrel
An effective way to tune a replica is to replace the factory barrel with a precision one. Unlike those used in standard replicas, precision barrels are produced with greater attention to detail. They feature better surface quality, maintain a constant diameter throughout the length, and have a better crown finish. These features minimize negative effects on the pellet's flight, resulting in increased shooting range by a few additional meters.
A precision barrel is primarily characterized by a smaller diameter (standard barrels have a diameter of 6.08-6.12 mm, while precision barrels have 6.05-6.01 mm) and a much more precise inner surface finish. These features reduce pellet spread, improving replica accuracy.
To notice a significant improvement in replica accuracy, regardless of whether using a stock or precision barrel, it is crucial to use high-quality pellets. Even the best precision barrels will not fully exploit their potential if used with poor quality pellets. Moreover, using low-quality pellets in a precision barrel can lead to damage, most often causing frequent barrel clogs. Therefore, a precision barrel = must-have high-quality pellets.
Replacing the Hop-Up rubber
Replacing the Hop-Up rubber in a replica is probably one of the simplest and cheapest tunings that brings great benefits. Using a Hop-Up rubber of better quality than the factory one allows for better pellet spinning, increasing their range.
Replacing the Hop-Up rubber with a higher-quality model offers several benefits. Primarily, it increases the replica's range, often by several meters. It also improves accuracy through even pellet spinning. Additionally, replacing the rubber eliminates the problem of freezing during shooting in low temperatures, which commonly causes significant range reduction with many factory rubbers. It's also worth noting that factory rubbers are more prone to damage.
Gearbox
Disassembling and reassembling the gearbox is a task requiring advanced skills, which not everyone possesses. Therefore, if you're not confident, it's recommended to send the replica to an ASG service. There are many components available on the market that can be replaced in the gearbox to improve replica performance. Examples include:
- gears — in cheaper replicas, they are often plastic and low quality, but can be replaced with steel ones.
- main spring — replacing it with a stronger one increases replica power, although in CQB (close quarters battle) scenarios, players often opt for a weaker spring to achieve the appropriate muzzle velocity. It's worth mentioning that many replicas, like those from Specna Arms, have a quick spring change system that allows for easy adjustment to battlefield conditions.
- pistons, spring guides, racks — these are selected gearbox components that can be replaced with those made from better materials. This provides the replica with greater durability, reliability, and a longer lifespan. Many of these parts are produced on advanced CNC machines, ensuring precision and durability, often surpassing the quality of factory components.
Risk-free ASG weapon tuning - accessories to increase replica range
Replacing parts and mechanisms in an ASG replica can be a challenge for beginner players, with a significant risk of damaging the replica. If you want to improve the performance of your model a bit without altering its build, you can also use less invasive tuning methods.
Good ASG pellets - greater accuracy and replica range
Choosing the right pellets for an ASG replica is very important for every airsoft enthusiast. Properly selected pellets directly influence the accuracy, range, and overall performance of the replica, providing better results and gameplay satisfaction. Good quality pellets are more precise and do not jam easily in magazines or hop-up chambers. This leads to less ammo wastage and fewer malfunctions of magazines and hop-up chambers during shooting. Lower quality pellets are less stable in flight, resulting in the need for more shots to hit the target and more frequent jams in the replica's mechanisms. You have several types of ASG pellets to choose from:
- Plastic pellets: the most popular airsoft pellets, usually made of ABS, available in various variants. Lighter pellets (0.12g – 0.20g) usually have higher muzzle velocity, while heavier ones (0.25g – 0.43g) offer greater flight stability.
- Biodegradable pellets: similar to plastic pellets but made from environmentally friendly materials and biodegradable.
- Fluorescent pellets (Tracer): intended for play in low-light conditions. They make it easier to track shot trajectories and improve aiming, especially during night games.
We recommend checking out our other article, where we describe in detail which pellets to choose for an ASG replica.
Sound suppressor — increasing realism and replica range
Many players eagerly purchase a sound suppressor for their ASG replica because it is an inexpensive and easy-to-install addition that does not interfere with its mechanics. In most cases, the suppressor is chosen mainly for aesthetic reasons, to give the replica a more realistic appearance. However, using a suppressor in an ASG replica can also affect its performance. Usually, it allows for the installation of a longer barrel, resulting in slightly greater range and higher muzzle velocity. While the difference is not large, some performance improvement can be achieved at a low cost. However, it's important to note that a longer barrel gives the best results primarily in gas and sniper replicas, which achieve very high muzzle velocities.
As for suppressors, there are also illuminating models available that, combined with Tracer pellets, glow in the dark, allowing for tracking shot trajectories. This is a great modification for those who conduct CQB games at night.
