Choosing the right bullets for the ASG replica is extremely important for any airsoft enthusiast. Bullets are one of the key factors affecting the accuracy, range and overall performance of a replica. Selecting a set of balls that best suits your replica and style of play can be a little tricky, given the wide range of options available on the market.
In this guide, we'll cover some important things to look out for when choosing balls for your ASG. Among other things, we will discuss how to choose the right weight of balls for a particular type and power of ASG replica. We will also point out which balls to choose for different terrain conditions, what to avoid when choosing balls and how to choose their colour.
Balls for ASG - what is worth looking out for?
ASG replica balls are an integral part of airsoft - a popular form of sport, recreation and tactical simulation. These balls are characterised by a number of variables, which include: weight, calibre, shape or the material from which they are made. Some of the most important factors to consider when choosing balls for an ASG replica include:
- mass,
- material,
- colour,
- workmanship,
- calibre,
- matching the shooting location.
Later in this guide, the issues mentioned will be discussed in detail.
How do I choose the right bullet weight for my ASG replica?
The selection of suitable ammunition depends mainly on the firing rate of the replica, which is usually given in FPS (Feet Per Second). The higher it is, the heavier the bullets you should choose. For example, for some of the most popular replicas of around 400 FPS, it is recommended to use balls weighing 0.28 g, and for replicas up to 200 FPS – 0,12 g. However, it is important to remember that this is only a guideline and a particular replica may perform better with balls of a different weight. Heavier balls for powerful replicas also mean better range and accuracy, as they are not as susceptible to obstacles appearing during flight. Too heavy balls will cause exactly the same thing as too light balls. The difference is that the flight path of the balls will not be variable as with light balls (depending on how the wind blows), and they will fly straight to the ground when fired. Choosing balls that are too light for a powerful replica will significantly reduce its focus and shorten its firing range.
Na poniższej grafice można sprawdzić, jaka waga kulek jest zalecana do danej prędkości repliki. The graphic may be helpful for beginner players, it is not meant to be universal. The fork shown below should be considered primarily as a guideline, but in practice it is best to allow time for individual testing with a specific replica.
ASG bullet material
ASG balls differ not only in colour, but also in the material they are made of. In order to choose the right ASG balls, it is important to take into account various factors such as the type of weapon used, the purpose of shooting and personal preferences. Below are the types of balls according to the material they are made from:
- ASG plastic pellets - most commonly found in ASG replicas, made of plastics such as polymer.
- Biodegradable ASG pellets - this type of ammunition is ideal for use in green spaces such as forests. It is made from biodegradable materials, such as cane sugar and corn starch. Their advantage is that they are environmentally friendly, as they have a reduced breakdown time. Nevertheless, there is no single rule here - depending on the manufacturer, the balls can disintegrate within six months or even within three years.
- ASG fluorescent bullets - designed for playing in low-light conditions, emitting light in the dark. This makes it easier to see the ball and aim, especially during night games. For better results, the additional use of tracer-type illuminators or magazines equipped with illumination is recommended.
- ASG metal balls - balls of this type are intended for training purposes only. Shooting them during games is categorically prohibited..
- ASG balls with paint - are not generally recommended because their use poses a risk of damaging the replica (if such a ball breaks in the magazine or in the barrel).
The colour of ASG balls - what does it matter?
The colour of the balls has the effect of improving accuracy because of the ability to correct the direction in which we are shooting after noticing what trajectory a particular ball maintains. Bright ASG balls, such as white, are easier to spot in flight, making it easier to shoot and monitor hits. Nonetheless, during heavy firing, the enemy can react quickly to bright projectiles flying towards them.
For a change dark bullets (such as green, brown or grey) can provide some tactical advantage. Seeing them in flight is difficult enough that it can be difficult for opponents to determine the direction of the shot, which can result in a delayed response to fire. Dark balls make it even more difficult to detect the shooter.
Some players load bullets into magazines, mixing light and dark in proportions of their choice. This allows them to control the firing area while confusing their opponents about the trajectory of the bullets being fired.
Quality of bullets and precision of shots
The quality of the manufacture of ASG balls largely determines the accuracy of the shots. High-quality balls are better balanced, making their flight path less susceptible to change. These types of balls are more precise and are more difficult to jam in magazines or hop-up chambers, which translates into less ammunition consumption and fewer magazine and chamber failures during shooting. Seamless balls are particularly recommended - especially for precision barrels, as they do not get jammed in the barrel and do not delaminate with more powerful replicas, which is strongly visible in the case of balls with seams.
Lower quality bullets are more unstable in flight, resulting in more shots needed to hit the target and jamming problems in the replica's mechanisms. Ultimately, the choice of high quality ASG bullets is crucial to shooting accuracy and performance during gameplay.
What are the bullet calibres for ASG?
In ASG, 6mm calibre balls are most commonly used. Larger calibres such as 8mm and 11mm are also available, but are rarely used.
Selection of ASG balls for the shooting location
What is important here is whether we plan to shoot in CQB conditions, where over-powerful replicas are usually forbidden by the tournament organiser, or in the forest, where more powerful replicas are usually used. So it all depends on the power of the replica to which we match the balls. The timing of the game is also an important aspect. For example, choosing black balls for night games is a very unwise decision.
CQB gameplay
During CQB (Close Quarters Battle), or close quarters combat, replicas with lower power, often no more than 350 FPS, are used. Bullet velocity is of paramount importance in this type of competition. It is recommended that for this type of replica, bullets weighing from 0,20 g up to 0,25 g. Lighter bullets in lower-powered replicas achieve greater velocity compared to heavier ones (e.g. 0,36 g), making it easier to aim and hit an opponent on the move.
Shooting in the forest
More powerful replicas are often used during woodland games, with some replicas, such as sniper rifles, achieving an initial bullet velocity in excess of 500 FPS. For shooting in the woods, especially at longer distances, it is advisable to use heavier ASG pellets, preferably in the 0.28g to 0.36g range. Such balls are characterised by stability in flight, resistance to wind and effectiveness in overcoming vegetation, such as leaves and branches.
ASG bullets in mixed terrain
In mixed terrain, when you are fighting both outdoors and indoors, it is best to use 0.25-0.28g balls. These pellets are versatile, yet provide stability at longer distances and maintain speed indoors. Importantly, the weight of the balls should be matched to the power of the replica, as we wrote about earlier in this article.
