Cold Steel Counter Tac I AUS8A Dagger

The boot knife features a Full Length Tang construction, where the tang extends throughout the entire handle for enhanced strength. Outfitted with a dagger-style double-edged blade crafted from AUS-8A stainless steel, this knife delivers reliable cutting performance. Its black handle is constructed from Kray-Ex material, offering a secure, non-slip grip. Included is a Secure-Ex system sheath for easy attachment to a belt or other gear, ensuring convenient and safe carry.

blade made of Japanese AUS-8A steel

Forged from Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel, the blade offers excellent edge retention, superior corrosion resistance, and balanced toughness. Thanks to its composition, the steel can be easily sharpened, even when outdoors.

Blade with a Dagger profile, Chisel Grind, stonewash finish

Featuring a symmetrical, double-edged blade with a Dagger profile, the knife offers a length of 127 mm and a thickness of 5 mm. A defining attribute is the application of a Chisel Grind, where the grind is present solely on one side, while the opposite side stays flat. Along the central section of the blade, the grind’s edges include a fuller to reduce overall weight and enhance balance. The blade receives a Stonewash finish, delivering a matte surface that dampens reflections and bolsters resistance to scratches.

Kray-Ex handle, Full Length Tang construction

The handle of the knife is crafted from Kray-Ex material with a pronounced texture, ensuring a reliable grip even when hands are wet or dirty. Boasting Full Length Tang construction, the tang extends to the end of the handle and remains only slightly narrower than the handle itself. A dual cross guard effectively stops fingers from sliding onto the blade. The handle also features a hole at its end, ideal for attaching a cord or lanyard.

Secure-Ex system sheath with clip

The knife includes a sheath featuring the Secure-Ex system, crafted from a lightweight and robust material that endures severe weather conditions. A precisely fitted opening ensures the knife remains securely in place, minimizing the chance of accidental loss. Outfitted with a removable composite clip, the sheath enables fast attachment to a belt or boot shaft. Multiple holes and slots offer flexible mounting options on various gear, allowing the user to tailor the carrying configuration to their specific preferences.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
AUS-8A feature
AUS-8A
AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
Stonewash feature
Stonewash
Stonewash is a blade finishing technique that involves treating steel in a drum filled with stones, ceramic abrasives, or beads. The impact of the material creates a characteristic, irregular pattern with micro-scratches, giving the effect of a matte, slightly “aged” surface with a raw, practical appearance. The finish gives the knife an aesthetic look and masks minor scratches and marks that occur during use, keeping the blade looking like new for longer. The matte texture reduces light reflections, which is valued in tactical and outdoor knives, and the micro-scratches can further reduce friction during cutting. Due to its durability, discreet appearance, and ease of maintenance, stonewash is popular in EDC, field, and tactical knives.

The dagger is very sharp and well balanced, it fits securely in the hand. AUS8A steel performs well and the workmanship is solid. It works well in the field and as an EDC. I recommend it.

A blade with excellent penetrating properties and a fuller that reinforces the knife's construction. The handle resembles that of the Applegate-Fairbairn dagger, providing a secure grip, and the sheath allows for almost any attachment and quick drawing of the knife in a dangerous situation. I recommend it.

A compact EDC dagger, fits securely even in a wet hand. The blade has a sufficient length, profiled in a C shape to facilitate piercing. The blade profile makes it not easy to sharpen and the dagger was almost completely dull straight out of the box. It's good they didn't use harder steel.

An inexpensive and decently made dagger/boot dagger. It's comfortable to carry, the handle is very ergonomic and almost sticks to the hand. I was looking for an affordable little dagger for a long time and this one fully meets my needs.

A bit too small... workmanship: I remember it used to look much better unfortunately, uneven cutting edge. In this model, CS didn't do well, CS CT 1 is much better.

Great little dagger, small and handy, can even be hidden in the boot shaft! Amazing, perfect for me.

Very sharp and durable, quite small but big enough for my big hands.

Nice, small dagger, but with a fairly large sheath it's definitely uncomfortable to wear around the neck.
