Cold Steel Facon Fixed Blade Knife 1090

A robust fixed-blade knife boasting a Drop-Point profile, crafted from 1090 carbon steel. The ergonomically shaped handle, fashioned from tough Sal wood in a deep brown hue, provides a reliable and firm grip. Supplied with a black leather sheath, the knife can be conveniently carried on a belt.

Inspired by traditional long Facon knives employed by South American Gauchos, the design is well-suited for both defensive purposes and a range of daily tasks, including food preparation, repairing saddles, and organizing camp equipment.

1090 carbon steel

Featuring a blade crafted from 1090 carbon steel, this knife delivers impressive hardness and excellent wear resistance. Proper heat treatment enables the steel to reach hardness levels of 55-58 HRC, ensuring a robust, easily maintained cutting edge. Regular upkeep is advised, as the material remains prone to corrosion.

Drop-Point profile blade, satin finish method

A broad and robust blade featuring a Drop-Point profile measures 304 mm in length and 5 mm in thickness. The razor-sharp edge is refined with a full flat grind, offering exceptional cutting performance. A symmetrical blade form combined with a narrow, acute tip delivers high precision for slicing and excellent penetration capability. A satin finish gives the blade a semi-matte appearance, contributing to a visually appealing look and enhanced resistance to scratches.

Handcrafted Sal wood handle

Handcrafted for comfort and durability, the handle is constructed from exotic Sal wood (robust dammar), and enhanced with a bolster as well as a decorative nickel-plated steel pommel. Grooved grip surfaces and jimping along the spine of the blade deliver secure handling and excellent control, even when hands are wet or dirty.

Leather sheath with fitting

A rugged black sheath crafted from thick leather is included, ensuring secure belt carry. Enhanced with a nickel-plated steel fitting for added decorative appeal.

1090 feature
1090
1090 is a carbon steel with an average carbon content of approximately 0.90%, which gives it good hardness and abrasion resistance. It achieves a hardness of 55-58 HRC after appropriate heat treatment, which allows for a durable cutting edge. Thanks to its simple composition (carbon and manganese), it is also easy to machine and has good hardenability properties. 1090 steel is relatively susceptible to corrosion, which requires proper protection and maintenance. It is widely used in the manufacture of knives, cutting tools, machetes, and in projects requiring high hardness and wear resistance. Although it does not contain alloying additives that improve corrosion resistance, its strength and ease of sharpening make it widely used in work tools and medium-hardness knives.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

Amazing knife, I tested it in the kitchen and it's great. Of course, it's thick and thin kitchen knives have the advantage, but the steel here does the job, carbon steel is carbon steel, and the weight of the knife is impressive.
