Cold Steel Finn Wolf AUS-8A - Orange

Inspired by the iconic Puukko knife, this folding knife is tailored for everyday carry (EDC) and is the creation of Andrew Demko and Lynn C. Thompson. Outfitted with a Straight Back blade crafted from AUS-8A stainless steel, it delivers an optimal blend of corrosion resistance, easy maintenance, and lasting edge strength. Featuring an orange handle made of Griv-Ex composite with a secure, non-slip grip texture, the knife is equipped with a double-sided thumb stud for swift deployment, while the Tri-Ad Lock mechanism enhances operational safety.

AUS-8A steel

Forged from Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel, the blade offers a well-rounded balance of qualities. Noteworthy features include excellent corrosion resistance, impressive impact resilience, and easy sharpening, enabling rapid edge restoration in the field. When subjected to proper heat treatment, the steel consistently reaches a hardness of 58–60 HRC for reliable cutting performance and long-lasting durability.

Straight Back blade, Scandi grind

Featuring a Straight Back blade profile, this tool boasts a length of 89 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. The cutting edge utilizes a zero Scandi grind, meaning the flat grind extends directly to the edge without a micro-bevel. Such a geometry enhances blade control through materials and enables fast edge maintenance.

Ergonomically shaped Griv-Ex grip, tip-up clip

The handle is made from a Griv-Ex glass-filled nylon composite, offering rugged durability. Its ergonomic contouring ensures a secure hand position, while the non-slip texture enhances grip stability, even when wet.

A spring clip enables convenient daily carry, allowing quick attachment to either a belt or pocket edge. The clip is reversible and can be installed in a tip-up orientation, making it suitable for both left- and right-handed users.

Tri-Ad Lock mechanism, double-sided stud

Equipped with a Tri-Ad Lock system, widely recognized as one of the most robust mechanisms available for folding knives, the knife utilizes a stop pin that redirects the force exerted on the blade, channeling the pressure into the handle to minimize wear. The locking system is designed to self-adjust over time, ensuring consistently secure performance.

Opening is facilitated by a double-sided stud, making the knife equally comfortable and accessible for both right- and left-handed users.

AUS-8A feature
AUS-8A
AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

Great folder with a scandi grind, cuts wood like butter. I chose this color because it's easy to find if dropped in the grass, for example. The mechanics, as always with CS, are perfect.
