Cold Steel Finn Wolf AUS-8A Folding Knife - Blue

Inspired by the classic Puukko knife, this folding knife is tailored for everyday carry (EDC) and designed by Andrew Demko and Lynn C. Thompson. The blade features a Straight Back profile and is crafted from AUS-8A stainless steel, delivering an excellent combination of corrosion resistance, easy sharpening, and enduring edge retention. The handle, finished in blue, utilizes Griv-Ex composite material with a secure, non-slip texture. Equipped with a double-sided thumb stud for ambidextrous opening and a Tri-Ad Lock system, the knife ensures enhanced safety during use.

AUS-8A steel

Forged from Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel, the blade offers well-balanced characteristics. Notable for its excellent corrosion resistance, solid impact resistance, and ease of sharpening, the steel allows for fast edge restoration. Once properly heat-treated, it generally reaches 58–60 HRC, ensuring reliable cutting ability and lasting durability.

Straight Back blade, Scandi grind

Featuring a Straight Back blade profile, this model offers a length of 89 mm and a thickness of 3 mm. Equipped with a zero Scandi grind, the flat grind extends directly to the edge, with no micro-bevel present. Such a blade geometry enhances control when guiding the edge through materials and enables swift edge maintenance.

Ergonomically shaped Griv-Ex grip, tip-up clip

The handle features a durable construction from Griv-Ex glass-filled nylon composite. Ergonomically contoured for secure hand placement, the design incorporates a non-slip texture to enhance grip security, providing reliable control even in wet environments.

A spring clip facilitates practical everyday carry, enabling attachment to a belt or pocket edge. The reversible clip offers mounting in a tip-up orientation, making it ideal for both right- and left-handed operators.

Tri-Ad Lock mechanism, double-sided stud

Equipped with a Tri-Ad Lock system, widely recognized as one of the toughest locking mechanisms used in folding knives. The lock utilizes a stop pin that absorbs force from the blade, dispersing it into the handle and minimizing wear. Over time, the mechanism automatically adjusts itself, ensuring secure and dependable operation.

A double-sided stud facilitates blade deployment, offering equally convenient access for both right- and left-handed users.

AUS-8A feature
AUS-8A
AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

Great folder with a scandi grind, cuts wood like butter. I chose this color because it's easy to find if dropped in the grass, for example. The mechanics, as always with CS, are perfect.
