Cold Steel Finn Wolf AUS-8A Folding Knife - Orange

A folding knife modeled after the classic Puukko knife, intended for everyday carry (EDC), designed by Andrew Demko and Lynn C. Thompson. The Straight Back blade is made of AUS-8A stainless steel, which offers a balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The orange handle is made of Griv-Ex composite with a non-slip texture. The knife opens using a double-sided thumb stud, and the Tri-Ad Lock enhances safety during use.

AUS-8A steel

The blade is made of Japanese AUS-8A stainless steel, which offers well-balanced properties. It is characterized by high corrosion resistance, good toughness, and ease of sharpening, which helps restore sharpness quickly. After proper heat treatment, the steel typically reaches 58–60 HRC, which translates to good cutting performance and durability.

Straight Back blade, Scandi grind

The blade, with a Straight Back profile, is 89 mm long and 3 mm thick. The cutting edge features a Scandi zero grind, which is a flat grind without a micro-bevel, where the ground surfaces meet directly at the edge. This geometry makes it easier to guide the blade through the material and allows for quick sharpening of the cutting edge.

Ergonomically shaped Griv-Ex grip, tip-up clip

The handle is made of Griv-Ex glass-nylon composite. Its ergonomic shape supports a stable grip, and the non-slip texture improves control during use, even in wet conditions.

Comfortable everyday carry is made possible by a spring-loaded clip, which allows the knife to be clipped to a belt or the edge of a pocket. The clip is reversible and can be mounted in a tip-up position for both right- and left-handed users.

Tri-Ad Lock mechanism, double-sided stud

The knife is equipped with the Tri-Ad Lock system, considered one of the strongest locking mechanisms in folding knives. The lock relies on a stop pin that absorbs pressure from the blade, distributing it to the handle and protecting it from wear. The mechanism self-adjusts over time, ensuring a secure lock.

The knife is opened using a two-way thumb stud, which allows for comfortable use by both right- and left-handed people.

Cold Steel is a respected American brand of knives, machetes, and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which provides high durability and wear resistance. Cold Steel patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand works with respected knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko, whose passion and experience contribute to the high quality of the products.

AUS-8A feature
AUS-8A
AUS-8A is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

Medium-sized folder with a scandi grind. I was persuaded by Joe X's destruction test. It's probably one of the most destruction-resistant folders. Besides that, it's nice with a super strong lock. The shop also handled the shipping very quickly.

A solid knife that won't kneel before any job. For the forest and the city. Workmanship and fit are flawless. The price to quality ratio is above average. I recommend the knife and the Militaria.pl store.

Great folder with a scandi grind that goes through wood like butter and doesn’t weigh much. Price is adequate to the quality, AUS8 steel performs well and sharpens quickly when needed.

Great folder with a scandi grind, like a folding Mora, but the steel is much better than Sandvik.

Build quality: Tri Ad Lock, blade size, Scandinavian grind and the quality of materials make this knife a useful piece of expedition equipment. The blade shape also makes it an excellent tool for camp and kitchen tasks.

Great folder with a scandi grind, cuts wood like butter. I chose this color because it's easy to find if dropped in the grass, for example. The mechanics, as always with CS, are perfect.

The knife itself is very nice, one of four folders with a scandi grind available on the market and the only one you don’t have to sell a kidney to buy. The steel could be better, AUS8 is not my first choice, but it gets the job done. The only thing to criticize is the thumb stud which makes it impossible to sharpen the knife near the guard.

For those who like scandi grind knives and are looking for a folding mini tank opener—I recommend it :) Durable and great knife, really solid tool with a good price/quality ratio.

Awesome, knife is very solid and razor sharp. Since childhood I’ve used classic puukkos like the Mora, but this showed me that a knife can also be folding, making it even more functional. I have several folders in my collection, but this one is the best for me. I already have my eye on other blades from this manufacturer. Highly recommended.
