Cold Steel Spartan AUS-10A Serrated Folding Knife

Folding knife crafted by knifemaker Andrew Demko, taking inspiration from the legendary Greek Kopis sword. The Spartan model serves as a folding version of the iconic Kopis, offering a sweeping, curved blade, pronounced belly, and a formidable, aggressive tip. Its blade, featuring a Recurve Kukri profile, is constructed from Japanese AUS-10A steel, renowned for its outstanding resistance to corrosion. The serrated blade receives a refined finish through a satinization method. A robust black handle made from Griv-Ex composite ensures reliable grip thanks to its anti-slip texture. Deployment is achieved with a double-sided thumb disc, while the Tri-Ad Lock provides exceptional safety for the user.

Japanese stainless steel AUS-10A

Forged from Japanese AUS-10A steel, the blade delivers outstanding durability along with excellent resistance to both corrosion and wear. Once hardened, it reaches a hardness level of 58-61 HRC.

Recurve Kukri blade with satin finish

Equipped with a blade featuring a Recurve Kukri profile, boasting a length of 114 mm and a thickness of 4 mm. Designed with a serrated cutting edge and a flat grind, the blade excels at slicing through ropes, cords, nets, and other fibrous materials. Enhanced by a satinization method, the blade displays a semi-matte finish that not only enhances its visual appeal but also improves scratch resistance.

non-slip handle made from Griv-Ex composite

Scales on the ergonomically shaped handle are crafted from Griv-Ex composite, a material highly resistant to mechanical impact and environmental influences. Enhanced with a non-slip surface and integrated finger grooves, the handle delivers a secure grip, even when hands are wet or dirty.

For daily portability, a spring clip is mounted on the handle, providing convenient attachment to a belt or pocket edge. The clip is reversible, accommodating both right- and left-handed users. At the handle’s end, a hole allows for the attachment of a lanyard or safety cord.

Tri-Ad Lock, double-sided disc

A thumb-operated disc mounted on the blade, accessible from both sides, ensures effortless one-handed opening for both right- and left-handed users. Quick deployment is possible by catching the disc on the pocket edge, similar to models fitted with the wave feature.

When opened, the blade is locked in place by the Tri-Ad Lock, an enhanced Back-Lock design offering superior resistance to dynamic stresses. Among folding knife mechanisms, it stands out as one of the most robust and reliable locking systems available. Furthermore, this lock provides excellent protection against accidental blade deployment when carried closed.

AUS-10 feature
AUS-10
AUS-10 is a high-quality stainless steel produced by the Japanese company Aichi Steel, considered one of the best in the AUS steel series, used mainly in mid-range and high-end utility knives, produced mainly in Japan and Taiwan. The carbon content (0.95-1.1%) ensures high hardness, while chromium (13-14.5%) guarantees very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. The steel also contains manganese (up to 1%), silicon (up to 1%), phosphorus (up to 0.025%), and sulfur (up to 0.025%), which affect hardenability, impact strength, elasticity, and machinability, improving structural stability and maintaining mechanical properties. After hardening, the steel achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, offering an excellent balance between strength, edge retention, and ease of sharpening. It is comparable to 440C steel, differing in carbon content and the addition of vanadium, which improves structural homogeneity and increases abrasion resistance.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

As is typical for Coldsteel – big, heavy, and with an extremely strong lock. That’s exactly what I expected when ordering ;) The handle feels too plasticky, but knowing CS products, that’s no surprise. The only thing that really annoys me is the clip being too strong. Of course, it’s better than too weak, but it’s really hard to take it out of your pocket, let alone put it back in. I don’t recommend it for people who care about the appearance of their pockets.
