Cold Steel Warcraft Tanto Medium San Mai III Fixed Blade Knife

A fixed-blade knife with a blade length of 139 mm and a Tanto profile, made of laminated San Mai III stainless steel. The scales are made of durable G10 glass-epoxy composite with a non-slip texture. The set includes a Secure-Ex sheath with holes and grommets for multi-position attachment to a belt or gear.

Laminated San Mai III stainless steel

The Warcraft model features a blade made of laminated San Mai III stainless steel, which offers excellent edge retention and high resistance to stress and cracking. The high-hardness steel core ensures good edge retention, while the outer layers made of softer steel increase flexibility and damage resistance.

Tanto profile blade, satin finish

The Tanto-profile blade is 139 mm long and 5 mm thick. The blade features a gently hollow grind, which provides a balance between strength and cutting performance. The blade’s thickness and geometry ensure durability and the ability to handle demanding materials. The blade surface has been finished using the satin finish method, which leaves an even, linear pattern after processing, reduces glare on the blade’s surface, and helps conceal minor scuffs that occur during use.

Full Tang construction, G10 scales

The ergonomically contoured handle, featuring a full-tang construction, is fitted with G10 glass-epoxy laminate scales that are resistant to mechanical damage and external factors. The non-slip texture ensures a secure and stable grip during use. A lanyard hole is located at the end of the handle, allowing a safety lanyard to be threaded through. The minimal, one-sided cross guard does not interfere with work, and together with the index finger notch, it provides sufficient protection for the hand even during powerful thrusts. On the spine, where the thumb rests, there is jimping (notching) that facilitates control over the blade during use.

Secure-Ex sheath

The sheath is made using the Secure-Ex system from weather-resistant plastic. The sheath holds the knife securely in place thanks to its custom-fit opening and snap-fastened loop, which reduces the risk of the knife accidentally falling out. The loop makes it easy to attach to a belt, and numerous holes and grommets allow for multi-position mounting to other pieces of gear as well.

Cold Steel is a respected American brand of knives, machetes, and tactical tools, founded in 1980 in Irving, California. The company gained popularity thanks to innovative solutions such as Kraton® handles and American Tanto blades, appreciated by uniformed services and military enthusiasts. It also introduced its own steel alloys, such as San Mai III®, which provides high durability and wear resistance. Cold Steel patented the Tri-Ad™ Lock blade locking mechanism, which guarantees safe use. The brand works with respected knifemakers, including the company's founder Lynn C. Thompson and Andrew Demko, whose passion and experience contribute to the high quality of the products.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
San Mai feature
San Mai
San Mai (ja. "three layers") is a three-layer steel laminate developed by Cold Steel, combining a hard, high-carbon core with outer layers of stainless steel that offer high flexibility and corrosion resistance. The outer layers protect the core from damage, increase the blade's impact resistance, and facilitate maintenance. Depending on the generation, Cold Steel has used different core steels: VG-1 (San Mai III), containing 0.95-1.05% carbon and 13-15% chromium, characterized by good edge retention and rust resistance, and VG-10, enriched with molybdenum (0.9-1.2%) and vanadium (0.2-0.3%), which improves hardness, abrasion resistance, and edge retention. After proper heat treatment, the core reaches a hardness of 59-61 HRC. Products with a VG-1 San Mai core are manufactured in Japan in limited editions and are used in Cold Steel's most exclusive collector's fixed knives. VG-10 San Mai is produced in small series and is used exclusively in top-of-the-line collector's knives. San Mai is a registered trademark of Cold Steel.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

A very interesting project, a knife with plenty of power and an aggressive design. Excellent Japanese steel, which has good cutting parameters and dulls slowly. I can recommend it without hesitation to those who like this kind of style.
