The fire starter is thick, not faked. The included plate is useless and should be thrown away. When used with a knife, it works well. It produces a shower of sparks. Their temperature is average. It ignites good tinder without any problems (dry cotton). With worse tinder (lignin), it's not as good. It's thick, so you can scrape a bit for worse tinder.

I always wanted to have one but somehow I resisted buying something better. Some small Chinese fire starters actually work very poorly. I took a risk and bought a real fire starter. It works great, even with the original striker. The sparks are powerful and you can have a lot of fun with it. Personally, I treat it as a gadget but it's fun to play with starting a fire using this method.
