The development of percussion locks occurred in the 19th century. Firearms featuring this locking mechanism virtually overtook and replaced earlier models utilizing the flintlock system. Among the reasons for adopting percussion locks were a reduced risk of misfires, improved resistance to harsh weather conditions, and more convenient loading in comparison to flintlock designs.
To prepare a black powder firearm for use, begin by pouring black powder into the barrel or chamber, followed by placing a wad and ball inside. Then, fit a percussion cap onto the nipple, making the firearm operational. Upon pulling the trigger, the hammer strikes the percussion cap, which ignites. The resulting flame passes through the nipple into the chamber containing the black powder, ultimately discharging the ball or projectile.
