Schrade Steelhead Folding Knife - Black

Folding knife designed for everyday carry (EDC) use. The Tanto-profile blade is made of Japanese AUS-10 stainless steel, which offers excellent corrosion resistance. The plain edge is coated with black oxide. The handle is made of G10 laminate with a non-slip texture. The knife opens using a flipper, and the Liner Lock mechanism ensures safe handling.

Japanese AUS-10 steel

The blade is made of Japanese AUS-10 steel commonly used in utility knives. It provides good corrosion resistance and is relatively easy to sharpen. It offers a balanced combination of wear resistance, edge retention, and toughness.

Tanto blade coated with black oxide

The Tanto-profile blade is 85 mm long and 3.2 mm thick. It features a plain cutting edge with a hollow grind. The blade is finished with black oxide, known for its anti-reflective and corrosion-resistant qualities. The back of the blade, where the thumb rests, includes jimping for increased control during use.

liner lock mechanism, flipper opening

The blade is locked with a durable Liner Lock. The knife is opened manually with the flipper, which also acts as a cross guard. The blade deploys smoothly thanks to the Ultra Glide system with ball bearings.

Everyday carrying is made comfortable by a spring steel pocket clip for easy attachment to a belt or pocket edge. The end of the handle features a lanyard hole.

AUS-8 feature
AUS-8
AUS-8 is a Japanese stainless steel, equivalent to 440B steel, characterized by a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (0.7-0.75%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13-14.5%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Vanadium additives (up to 0.26%) improve the homogeneity of the steel's crystal structure and increase the blade's resistance to abrasion. The steel also contains molybdenum (0.1-0.3%), manganese (0.5%), silicon (0.4-1%), and nickel (0.49%). After proper heat treatment, AUS-8 steel achieves a hardness of 58-60 HRC, making it a solid material with good cutting properties and durability. The steel is widely used in mid-range knives, mainly produced in Japan and Taiwan, such as the popular Ontario RAT 1.
System Ultra Glide feature
System Ultra Glide
Ultra-Glide system used in Schrade knives is a ball bearing-based opening mechanism designed to ensure smooth, light, and quick one-handed blade deployment. This solution minimizes the resistance of the mechanism, making the blade movement smooth, precise, and much more pleasant than in designs without bearings. Ultra-Glide significantly facilitates knife operation by reducing the effort required to open it, making it particularly practical in EDC knives.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.
Black Oxide feature
Black Oxide
Black Oxide is a chemical conversion process in which a thin layer of magnetite (Fe3O4) is formed on the surface of steel and other ferrous metals. It gives a black, matte appearance, reduces reflectivity, and does not affect the dimensions of the components, so it can also be used in precision parts. The coating provides limited corrosion protection, so it is usually reinforced with oil or wax. Black Oxide is used in knives, firearms, and tools. The process requirements are specified in MIL-DTL-13924, which covers processing grades, color uniformity, and corrosion resistance tests, and is the basic standard for military and technical applications.
