Kupilka is a Finnish outdoor cookware brand with roots going back to 1775 — when an unknown home brewer named Kuisma carved a wooden cup to taste his own homemade spirits. That cup, now preserved in a Finnish museum under the name Harakkakuppi (Magpie Cup), became the founding inspiration for the entire brand, which was brought to life more than two centuries later by an eco-minded family from Eastern Finland. Today, Kupilka stands as a synonym for Scandinavian tradition, outstanding craftsmanship, and a deep respect for nature.

Brand History and Philosophy

Kupilka was officially founded around 2001, when designer Kari Kuisma — a descendant of the legendary Kuisma from 1775 — joined forces with architect and designer Heikki Koivurovato design the first cup inspired by the historic Harakkakuppi. The company is based in Kontiolahti in North Karelia — at the heart of the Finnish wilderness — with a firm conviction that business should be conducted with respect for nature and ethical values. As one of the first companies in Finland, Kupilka powers its entire production exclusively on EKOenergy renewable energy, bringing the carbon footprint of manufacturing down to zero.

Kareline® Material — Innovation from Nature

At the core of Kupilka's philosophy is the proprietary Kareline® Natural Fibre Composite — a material developed by the Puugia Wood Technology Centre in Joensuu. It consists of 50% cellulose wood fibres sourced from certified Finnish forests and 50% FDA-approved polypropylene acting as a binding agent. This composition gives Kupilka products the natural texture and warmth of wood, while making them resistant to moisture, temperature fluctuations (from -30°C to +100°C), dishwasher use, and hard field conditions. The material ages beautifully — like wood — without losing its properties.

Products and Range

The flagship product remains the Kupilka 21 — a classic 210 ml cup with a traditional handle and a spoon included, ideal for coffee, tea, and hot drinks around the campfire. The product range includes cups in various sizes (Kupilka 21, 37, 55), bowls, plates, platters, cutlery, and complete tableware sets for one person or the whole family. All items are available in several harmonious colours inspired by the Finnish landscape: classic brown, pine green, cranberry red, black kelo, and bilberry blue.

Who Is It For and When?

Kupilka products are a natural fit for bushcraft, camping, trekking, and survival — wherever light weight, durability, and good looks matter. They work just as well for a weekend picnic as for a multi-day mountain expedition. Finns have a long tradition of drinking coffee from a Kupilka around the campfire — a tradition that translates perfectly into outdoor culture worldwide.
