The Opinel folding knife is a product whose roots go all the way back to 1890! It was there, in the village of Chambery, that the Opinel company was founded by Joseph Opinel. For more than a century it has been producing great tools that are recognized around the world. It is interesting to note that Opinel knives derive their shape and head from ancient shepherd's knives and their usefulness and functionality make them successfully used to this day. There are known cases when Opinel folding knives were dug out of the ground after several decades and were still serviceable. Opinel folding knives are aimed at all professional groups as well as buschcraft, survival and mushroom enthusiasts. The hallmarks of Opinel folding knives are three things - wood, steel and a locking mechanism. As for wood, Opinel uses many species of wood. However, beech wood is used most often due to its resistance to weather conditions. Opinel has taken care to perfect the shape of the handle over the years, so that the knives, which are available in many sizes, have been adapted to any type of hand and will be comfortable for both adult trappers and juvenile scouts. In addition, the wood gives the whole knife a classic look and is a nice departure from tactical folders (folding knives).
The second important factor is the steel from which the Opinel folding knife is made. Most often there are two steels or, more accurately, one steel in two versions. This is Sandvik steel in high-carbon and modified (stainless) versions. The former will be great for camping and all hiking activities. This is the steel used by the legendary Mora knives. It ensures that the knife will be harder to dull and relatively easy to sharpen. The stainless steel version, on the other hand, is resistant to corrosion, but may dull a bit faster and require more attention during sharpening. Regardless of the steel used, we recommend the use of preservative oils to prevent corrosion and ensure the Opinel folding knife opens, and closes smoothly. Last, but not least, the most recognizable feature of Opinel folding knives is their locking mechanism. It relies on a twist ring located just below the knife head. This solution is perfect in its simplicity, as a piece of metal goes under the blade and we can see with our own eyes that there is no physical possibility for the blade to close on our hand while we are working. This is the feature that has given Opinel a timeless value and made this French brand recognizable all over the world today. Likewise with the folding of the knife - by twisting the ring, we can be sure that the knife will not open in our pocket.
Thanks to these three components, Opinel has been providing unparalleled functionality in its tools for more than a century. The company offers knives from the basic edition, but there is also no shortage of specialized blades such as the Opinel Mushroom folding knife, which is dedicated to mushroom hunters and, thanks to the curved shape of the blade, will be perfect for the mushroom hobby. In addition, it is equipped with a useful broom. You can also find bread knives or typical hunting knives. A great advantage of Opinel knives is their price, which is relatively small compared to the materials used and the overall quality of the knife. In our offer you will find dozens of models of knives from the French company Opinel. Most of them vary in size to best suit your individual needs. Trust the French brand as millions of people around the world have trusted it. Annually the company produces as many as fifteen million of them!
