Opinel No.12 INOX Folding Knife

An exceptionally lightweight, medium-sized folding knife equipped with a 12 cm lockable blade. Recognized as a classic from a French producer with a legacy spanning over a century. The Clip-Point blade is crafted from stainless steel and finished with a semi-matte polish. Featuring a flat grind nearly reaching a zero-grind, paired with a slim blade profile, the knife delivers outstanding cutting performance.

Simple and reliable Virobloc locking mechanism

When opened, the blade is secured by the Virobloc locking mechanism, a patented design from 1955. Positioned at the blade’s pivot point on the handle, the steel ring rotates a few degrees after the knife is opened, effectively covering the blade slot and locking the blade in position. This feature also prevents unintentional opening when the knife is folded. Opening the knife is made easy by a notch on the blade, reminiscent of those found on Victorinox pocket knives.

Contoured handle made of beech wood

The handle is crafted from beech wood, featuring an ergonomic design for a secure and comfortable grip. Its warm feel enhances user experience during extended use. An added benefit of the handle lies in its ease of customization. The most straightforward upgrade involves drilling a hole in the rear section to attach a safety lanyard. Additional modifications allow for custom texturing, carving, and staining according to personal preference.

Opinel is a French knife brand whose history dates back to 1890 in Savoy. The founder, Joseph Opinel, created the first folding knife, No. 08, which quickly became a symbol of everyday use thanks to its simplicity and functionality. In 1955, the Virobloc locking system was introduced, later modernized, which is still the hallmark of the brand today. In 1985, Opinel was recognized by the Victoria and Albert Museum as one of the 100 best-designed objects in the world, and the brand's knives also found their way into the MoMA collection in New York. Production takes place in Chambery, with an emphasis on quality and ecology - the wood comes from French forests and the waste is used to heat the factory. Among the famous users was Pablo Picasso, who used Opinel for carving, and the knives themselves have become a symbol of simplicity, durability, and the French lifestyle.

Great knife, both at home in the kitchen and when traveling or camping. It arrives very sharp (I found out personally). It cuts meat, soft tomatoes, and bread wonderfully; it goes through like butter. And the Virobloc blade lock is a nice feature. By the way, people unfamiliar with it, when they pick up an Opinel for the first time, think the blade doesn't have a lock. But then they get a surprise. I recommend it!

I have the 8 and this one will be next. After a few days of testing, it convinced me, even though the blade seems thin and delicate, it actually isn’t. Because of that, it cuts through meat and tomatoes with no effort at all, and it stays sharp for a long time.

The Opinel No.12 INOX folding knife is a classic that still does the job. The stainless steel blade cuts confidently, is sharp right out of the box and easy to sharpen, and the Virobloc lock works flawlessly. The wooden handle fits well in the hand and has a pleasant, natural grip. It's a simple, elegant knife for fieldwork, camping, or daily tasks—solid and durable, yet light and comfortable to carry.

The knife is excellent for everyday tasks: cutting, scraping, or food preparation, and its simplicity and reliability mean you need nothing more. The beechwood handle requires minimal maintenance but adds charm and comfort in use. Overall, it's a solid, practical folding kitchen knife at an affordable price, which I can recommend to everyone.

Very large knife, really more like a folding kitchen knife, and it worked great in this role during trips to the sea. It's always worth having your own sharp knife.

This knife is perfect for camping and preparing food. Its size is ideal for kitchen work. The construction quality is excellent. It is worth treating the wood with edible oil right after purchase to prevent water absorption. Light, sharp and effective. The lock works well. I recommend it!

Militaria, as always, did great in terms of speed. The Opinel 12 I bought is the best in terms of size, for example, for camping and into the forest. In general, the company is a legend, so no need to advertise much. So far, I used the No.08 every day, but compared to No.12, it's simply a machete next to the other. For trips to the Bieszczady region where I go, it's a must-have. I recommend it.

It serves its purpose perfectly. After oiling, the big stainless Opinel became my travel folding kitchen knife. Once sharpened, it sliced through a million tons of tomatoes without leaving any taste, which is a huge advantage of inox over carbon.

After many smaller models, it was time for my largest, the No.12 INOX. When I first held it, I was really impressed. It really is quite a chunk of a knife. Sharp as a razor but surprisingly light for its size. Even though I haven't used it often—mostly it's a showpiece in my collection—I have tried using it for various tasks a few times. It easily cut meat, bread, fruit, vegetables, shaved sticks for the campfire, opened packages, and spread butter.

Greetings to all knife enthusiasts! I've written before about a smaller Opinel, but once again I'd like to recommend it. In my humble opinion, it's the best knife in the world when it comes to price, but not only. It works perfectly with a fire striker, and it’s best for peeling potatoes, vegetables, and it also handles meat. You can sharpen it just like Japanese kitchen knives using an Opinel sharpener – it’s as smooth as 2000-grit paper, you just need to stroke it for a long time, but the results are really worth it. Great for the kitchen and more. Highly recommend.

A slicing powerhouse in the kitchen, especially in the inox version, perfect for meal preparation. I have a carbon version, already well-used, but still shaves hair, so by the principle 'who has an Opinel inox – rust is no longer a problem,’ I bought the stainless one.

Big for an Opinel, but once folded, still rather small and light. Great cutting properties, and such blade size is perfect for preparing meals. Especially good for slicing bread, cake, large tomatoes, and other vegetables, spreading wafers, etc.

This is another Opinel knife for me. All the ones so far have performed perfectly. I bought the twelve because of its size. It works great in a travel kitchen, slices bread, cold cuts, tomatoes, and whatever else you dream up for eating. I highly recommend it.

A knife ideal for camping and preparing food. The size is just right for kitchen tasks. High quality workmanship. Right after purchase, it’s worth protecting the wood with edible oil so it doesn’t absorb water. It needed a bit more sharpening.

Classic folding knife, for me, it works best in the kitchen, it's great for chopping vegetables. The wood absorbs water, so when wet it can be hard to open.
