OTF knives, or out-the-front knives, are automatic or manual blades in which the edge slides linearly out of the front of the handle, offering extremely fast, fully one-handed deployment and retraction. This type of knife is valued wherever licenced users need instant access to a reliable cutting tool while maintaining a secure grip on other equipment or a weapon.
Typical OTF knives in this category include both single‑action models, in which the spring drives the blade out and you manually reset it, and double‑action OTF automatic knives that extend and retract via the same sliding button. When choosing an out-the-front knife, pay attention to the mechanism type, the stiffness and texture of the firing switch, and overall reliability of the lock-up under load. Users often look for robust handles made from aluminium or reinforced polymers, precise internal tolerances, as well as steels optimised for edge retention, corrosion resistance and ease of field maintenance.
Among the key functional parameters of an OTF knife are blade length and profile, available in spear point, tanto or drop point variants, the presence of partial serrations, as well as additional elements such as glass breakers, deep-carry clips or lanyard holes. Tactical OTF knives are frequently selected by military personnel and uniformed services operating in demanding conditions, while compact double‑action OTFs are appreciated as everyday carry tools for controlled, repeatable cuts in confined spaces. Enthusiasts of survival and outdoor activities value models that combine a secure grip, dependable mechanism and easy disassembly or servicing.
