Cold Steel Espada G10 Large AUS10A Folding Knife

A robust and sizable knife from the Espada series, drawing inspiration from the iconic Spanish Navaja style. Well-suited for collectors, this folding model offers the full range of practical features expected from a high-quality outdoor tool. Outfitted with a modified Clip-Point blade crafted from premium Japanese AUS-10A stainless steel, this knife is ideal for enthusiasts seeking reliable gear for outdoor adventures.

AUS10A stainless steel

Measuring 140 mm in length and 3.7 mm in width, the blade features a modified Clip-Point design combined with a hollow grind. Crafted from Japanese AUS-10A stainless steel, it delivers an impressive balance of edge retention and crack resistance, while remaining straightforward to resharpen.

double-sided disc, Tri-Ad lock

A thumb-operated disc accessible from both sides is mounted on the blade, enabling effortless knife opening with either hand. With its precisely engineered notching, the disc also mimics the functionality of Emmerson's wave feature—during withdrawal from the pocket, the protrusion catches the edge, delivering rapid blade deployment.

Once opened, the blade is secured by the exceptionally dependable Tri-Ad Lock, an advanced iteration of the Back Lock. In contrast to earlier designs, it offers a much deeper engagement and, when under stress, rests against a robust stop pin that restricts blade movement, enhancing overall stability. Currently, it stands as the most robust and secure locking system found on production folding knives.

G10 laminate handle

The handle features a robust steel frame, outfitted with black G10 fiberglass-epoxy composite scales that are fastened by screws. Engineered for ergonomics, the design provides an exceptionally secure grip, enhanced by the non-slip surface texture.

spring clip

A spring clip integrated into the handle ensures convenient everyday carry, making it easy to secure the knife to a belt or the edge of a pocket. Offering versatility, the clip is reversible and can be positioned tip-up for optimal use by both right and left-handed operators.

AUS-10 feature
AUS-10
AUS-10 is a high-quality stainless steel produced by the Japanese company Aichi Steel, considered one of the best in the AUS steel series, used mainly in mid-range and high-end utility knives, produced mainly in Japan and Taiwan. The carbon content (0.95-1.1%) ensures high hardness, while chromium (13-14.5%) guarantees very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. The steel also contains manganese (up to 1%), silicon (up to 1%), phosphorus (up to 0.025%), and sulfur (up to 0.025%), which affect hardenability, impact strength, elasticity, and machinability, improving structural stability and maintaining mechanical properties. After hardening, the steel achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, offering an excellent balance between strength, edge retention, and ease of sharpening. It is comparable to 440C steel, differing in carbon content and the addition of vanadium, which improves structural homogeneity and increases abrasion resistance.
Tri-Ad Lock feature
Tri-Ad Lock
Tri-Ad Lock is a lock developed by Cold Steel and Andrew Demko, considered one of the strongest systems in folding knives. Its key element is a stop pin, which takes the pressure from the blade and distributes it to the handle, protecting the lock from wear and overload. The mechanism is designed to self-adjust over time, which maintains the reliability of the lock even after prolonged use. In tests, it has proven resistant to loads of up to hundreds of pounds, confirming its durability.
G10 feature
G10
G10 is a lightweight and extremely durable material, considered one of the best for knife production. It is created by pressure-pressing fiberglass with phenolic resin, which gives it high durability and resistance to mechanical damage. It is chemically inert, does not conduct electricity, and retains its properties at both low and high temperatures. In terms of parameters, it is similar to carbon fiber, but its production is much cheaper. G10 handles are manufactured by precision cutting and cutting, which increases the cost of processing but ensures a perfect fit and long knife life.

Blade: good blade profile, functional, practical, and even suitable for making sandwiches. Steel: inexpensive, well-tempered – more than sufficient for everyday use. Length and weight: suitable – smaller than the Espada XL, but still with good reach; similar in size to the Voyager XLs, but heavier (which can be a plus for occasional chopping). It sticks out of the pocket less than the Rajah II or Espada XL, and is easier to grab compared to, for example, the Spartan, which sticks out of the pocket very little. Lock: Tri-Ad Lock works reliably, as always. Demko plate: if the Demko plate doesn't engage immediately, it's worth gently tilting the knife outward when pulling it from the pocket, so it catches the edge better. Smooth opening: if you have problems with smooth opening, it's worth disassembling the knife and sanding the sliding part on the blade with fine sandpaper (2000+ grit). This surface should also be regularly oiled. Handle: fits well in the hand, provides a secure grip. Summary: a good compromise between a combat-ready size and everyday usability.
