1050 is a medium-carbon steel, which is the American equivalent of Japanese S50C steel, used in bushcraft and survival knives as well as work tools. The carbon content of 0.47-0.55% ensures good hardness and edge retention, while manganese 0.6-0.9% increases hardenability and impact resistance. The addition of silicon 0.15-0.35% improves elasticity and structural stability during heat treatment. The low phosphorus and sulfur content reduces the brittleness of the material, which translates into its durability and flexibility. After hardening, the steel achieves a hardness of 55-60 HRC, maintaining a balance between abrasion resistance and ease of re-sharpening.
