Cold Steel Magnum Tanto II CPM 3V Knife

A tactical knife with a Full Tang construction, combining the features of a survival knife and a combat knife. The Tanto-profile blade is made of CPM-3V powder-coated steel, which is highly resistant to wear. The blade is coated with black DLC. The black handle is made of Kray‑Ex material with a non-slip texture. The set includes a Secure‑Ex sheath, which allows for convenient carrying of the knife on a belt or attached to other pieces of gear.

CPM-3V powder steel

The blade is made of CPM-3V powder-coated steel, which, although not stainless steel, offers good corrosion resistance. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58–61 HRC, providing a balance between strength, durability, and ease of sharpening.

Tanto-profiled blade with DLC coating

The blade, with a Tanto profile, is 191 mm long and 5 mm thick. It features a smooth cutting edge finished with a semi-flat grind. It is characterized by a reinforced tip, where the full thickness of the spine extends almost to the very tip. The knife’s construction ensures high durability, allowing it to handle demanding tasks. The blade is coated with a black Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating, which protects against scratches, improves corrosion resistance, and minimizes glare.

Kray-Ex grip with non-slip texture

The knife's black handle is made of Kray-Ex with a deep texture, ensuring a secure grip even with wet or dirty hands. The knife features a full-tang construction with the blade tang running the entire length of the handle, which is only slightly narrower than the handle itself. The disc-shaped cross guard prevents fingers from slipping onto the blade. The handle is topped with a steel pommel, which can serve as a glass breaker and an improvised field tool. Additionally, there is a hole in the handle for threading a safety cord or lanyard.

Secure-Ex system sheath

The sheath included with the knife in the Secure-Ex system is made of a lightweight, durable material that can withstand harsh weather conditions. The sheath holds the knife securely in place thanks to a custom-fit opening and a snap-fastening loop, which prevents it from accidentally falling out. The loop allows the sheath to be attached to a belt, and numerous holes and grommets enable multi-position attachment to a belt or other pieces of gear.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
CPM 3V feature
CPM 3V
CPM 3V is a premium powder tool steel produced by Crucible Industries, known for its high resistance to impact, fracture, and wear. It contains 0.8% carbon, 7.5% chromium, and additions of molybdenum (1.3%), vanadium (2.75%), manganese (up to 1%), and silicon (up to 1%) additives, which improve wear resistance and structural stability. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58-61 HRC, providing a balance between strength, durability, and ease of sharpening. Although CPM 3V is not stainless steel, it offers good corrosion resistance and is widely used in the manufacture of military, survival, and hunting knives. It is suitable for intensive use in harsh conditions, combining high wear resistance, better ductility, and longer edge retention compared to other tool steels.
DLC - Diamond-Like Carbon feature
DLC - Diamond-Like Carbon
DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) is a modern protective coating in which a thin layer of amorphous carbon with a structure similar to diamond is applied to steel. It increases the hardness and abrasion resistance of the blade, protects against corrosion, and reduces friction during cutting. The characteristic matte shade of black or anthracite gives the knife a tactical look and eliminates light reflections, which is important in military and outdoor applications. Thanks to its high scratch resistance, the blade retains its aesthetics and functional properties for longer, which is why the DLC finish is widely used in EDC, field, and tactical knives.

The knife looks fantastic, a true work of art. I haven't tested the blade on anything hard yet, but if the quality matches the appearance, it will be worth every penny spent. I won't hesitate to write more once I try the knife in the field.
