Cold Steel Mini Tac Bowie 8Cr13MoV Fixed Blade Knife

A compact knife with a fixed blade featuring a full-tang construction, designed by the renowned knifemaker Andrew Demko, intended for everyday carry (EDC) and outdoor use. It features a Bowie-profile blade made of 8Cr13MoV stainless steel and black Griv-Ex handle scales with a non-slip texture, ensuring a secure and stable grip. The set includes a Secure-Ex sheath and a ball-chain for carrying around the neck.

8Cr13MoV stainless steel

The blade is made of 8Cr13MoV stainless steel, which offers a good balance of edge durability, corrosion resistance, and ease of maintenance. After heat treatment, it achieves a hardness of 58–60 HRC, ensuring durability and performance even under heavy use.

Bowie profile blade

The blade, with aBowie-style profile, is 92 mm long and 2.5 mm thick. It features a smooth cutting edge, finished with ahigh-flat grind. This ensures excellent cutting performance while maintaining piercing capability. The blade has been finished using the bead-blasting method, which gives it a matte texture that reduces light reflections and also increases scratch resistance.

Full Tang construction, ergonomic Griv-Ex grip

The knife's handle features a full-tang construction, which means that the steel tang extends the entire length of the handle, ensuring its strength and stability. The tang is fitted with scales made of Griv-Ex, a durable glass-fiber-reinforced composite. The non-slip grip, with clearly defined finger grooves and jimping on the blade spine, ensures good control of the knife, even with wet or dirty hands. Additionally, a small steel cross guard protects the hand from sliding onto the blade.

Secure-Ex system sheath, neck carry chain

The sheath included with the knife in the Secure‑Ex system is made of a lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant material. It features numerous holes for threading a cord. The sheath holds the knife securely in place, preventing it from accidentally falling out. The knife can be worn around the neck using the included ball chain, ensuring convenience and comfort in everyday use.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
8Cr13MoV (8Cr13) feature
8Cr13MoV (8Cr13)
8Cr13MoV (8Cr13) is a Chinese stainless steel equivalent to Japanese AUS-8 steel. It offers a good balance between corrosion resistance, ease of sharpening, and edge retention. The carbon content (approximately 0.8%) affects the hardness of the steel, while chromium (13%) provides very good corrosion and abrasion resistance. Additions of molybdenum (0.3%), vanadium (up to 0.2%), manganese (0.5%), and silicon (0.4%) improve abrasion resistance and the stability of the steel structure. 8Cr13MoV is often used in the production of knives, including by companies such as Spyderco and Benchmade, which manufacture in China. After proper heat treatment, 8Cr13MoV steel achieves a hardness of 56-58 HRC, which makes it a material with good cutting properties, easy to sharpen, and relatively resistant to wear.
Bead Blast feature
Bead Blast
Bead Blast is a blade finishing technique that involves treating steel with a stream of fine ceramic or glass beads under high pressure. It gives the surface a uniform matte, satin-gray appearance without any light reflections. The surface obtained in the sandblasting process is smooth and aesthetic, but due to micro-pores, it may be slightly more susceptible to wear and corrosion if the blade is not properly protected. Nevertheless, Bead Blast is valued for its simplicity, discretion, and masking properties, which is why it is used in EDC, outdoor, and military knives.
Griv-Ex feature
Griv-Ex
Griv-Ex is a durable glass-nylon composite reinforced with fiberglass used by Cold Steel, mainly for the production of knife handles, and in some models also for blade components. The material has a textured surface on the handles, which ensures a secure, non-slip grip, and its maintenance usually boils down to simple washing under running water. Griv-Ex is distinguished by its resistance to moisture, corrosion, mechanical damage, and extreme temperatures, and does not warp or crack under harsh conditions. When used in the construction of blades, it is additionally stabilized by UV rays and heat, which further increases its durability.

Excellent neck knife from Cold Steel. For really fair money, you get a great small knife made of good steel to wear around your neck. Worth every penny spent.

Another nice little knife from Cold Steel - a blade with an interesting shape and a nicely contoured grip. As a neck knife, it's probably more suitable for outdoor occasions (camping, forest walks), because it might be a bit too big for daily wear around the neck.

Factory sharpened decently 3/5, very nice sheath, looks badass. On the downside, the handle should be about 2 cm longer. Overall, a neck knife worth recommending.

I bought this knife as a pair with the MINI TAC-FAUX TANTO I bought earlier, made of the same steel. The Tanto is like a small cleaver and the Bowie is an aggressive little one. The sheath and the knife both get a 5, as expected from Cold Steel.

Sharp, solid, and handy. The quality of this knife pleasantly surprised me.

The plastic handle scales move during heavier use. The grip is very secure but less comfortable than a typical handle; works well even in thick gloves.

Awesome! Good grip, sharp, and the sheath holds tightly. I recommend it!

Surprisingly ergonomic, fits great in the hand. A bit too big to wear on a chain, but fine in a pocket.

For a handle of this length, I have to say it feels really secure. The steel, although not top-tier, is well hardened, and the sheath is standard Cold Steel quality—hard to find better.
