San Mai Steel Laminate

Featuring a blade crafted from San Mai laminated stainless steel, developed by Cold Steel, the knife utilizes a three-layer construction that offers superior edge retention, outstanding flexibility, and excellent resistance to corrosion. At the core of the laminate lies VG-10 steel, which, following precise heat treatment, attains a hardness of 59–61 HRC for exceptional edge durability. Such engineering ensures the tool remains highly resistant to damage, robust, and simple to upkeep.

Blade with Tanto profile, satin finish

Engineered in a Tanto profile, the blade boasts a 178 mm length and a thickness of 5 mm. Featuring a sleek cutting edge with a flat grind, the blade is characterized by a fortified tip where the spine maintains its full thickness nearly to the very point. Such a construction provides exceptional durability, enabling performance under intensive tasks. Enhanced by a satin finish, the semi-matte blade surface not only improves visual appeal but also offers increased resistance to scratching throughout use. Outfitted with a shortened dull notch (ricasso), the edge is extended, beginning closer to the handle for greater effective cutting length.

Handle with non-slip Kray-Ex texture

A handle crafted from black Kray-Ex material with aggressive texturing provides a secure grip, even when hands are wet or dirty. Built with a Full Length Tang construction, the blade’s tang extends through the entire handle, remaining slightly slimmer than the handle itself. A single-sided cross guard acts as a safeguard to prevent fingers from sliding onto the blade. An integrated lanyard hole is positioned at the end of the handle for attaching a securing cord or lanyard.

The sheath accompanying the knife in the Secure-Ex system features a construction of lightweight, robust, and weather-resistant material. Secure knife retention is ensured by a fitted inlet combined with a snap-fastened loop, effectively safeguarding against accidental loss. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.

San Mai
San Mai (ja. "three layers") is a three-layer steel laminate developed by Cold Steel, combining a hard, high-carbon core with outer layers of stainless steel that offer high flexibility and corrosion resistance. The outer layers protect the core from damage, increase the blade's impact resistance, and facilitate maintenance. Depending on the generation, Cold Steel has used different core steels: VG-1 (San Mai III), containing 0.95-1.05% carbon and 13-15% chromium, characterized by good edge retention and rust resistance, and VG-10, enriched with molybdenum (0.9-1.2%) and vanadium (0.2-0.3%), which improves hardness, abrasion resistance, and edge retention. After proper heat treatment, the core reaches a hardness of 59-61 HRC. Products with a VG-1 San Mai core are manufactured in Japan in limited editions and are used in Cold Steel's most exclusive collector's fixed knives. VG-10 San Mai is produced in small series and is used exclusively in top-of-the-line collector's knives. San Mai is a registered trademark of Cold Steel.

Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

    I am a happy owner of this legendary knife, although it is fair to say that it is a multifunctional cutting tool for special tasks! It is perfectly made of excellent carbon steel. The first manual contact makes you realize that you are dealing with something very solid, which fits perfectly in the hand. The knife is already very sharp after purchase, and you can refine the sharpness even more. The sheath fits perfectly, the knife enters with slight resistance and won't fall out. The whole set makes a very aesthetic and professional impression. I recommend it to those who need and appreciate solid items!!!

    This is not a knife for everyday carry by your pants—it's too big. Very solid—almost like a mini machete. Despite its size, it's not too heavy. The rubberized handle feels good in the hand. The sheath holds the knife well—nothing rattles or falls out, even with the handle strap undone. I wanted an "indestructible" knife for tough tasks, not a small razor, and this one gives that impression. The price definitely matches the quality.
