Cold Steel SRK San Mai VG-10 Knife

Tactical knife designed with a Full Length Tang construction, integrating the capabilities of survival, combat, and rescue knives. The blade features a Clip-Point profile and is crafted from VG-10 San Mai laminated steel, renowned for its exceptional resistance to corrosion and wear. Finished using a satin technique, the blade ensures optimal performance and durability. The black handle is constructed from Kray-Ex material and features a non-slip texture for secure grip. Supplied with a sheath utilizing the Secure-Ex system, the knife can be carried conveniently on a belt or mounted alongside other gear.

The SRK model is highly regarded by military personnel and law enforcement agencies, including use by Navy SEALs during BUDS (Basic Underwater Demolition Training) sessions.

San Mai laminated steel

The blade features a laminated construction using San Mai stainless steel, engineered by Cold Steel. Thanks to its three-layer build, the blade delivers excellent edge retention along with superior flexibility and resistance to corrosion. At the core lies VG-10 steel hardened to 59–61 HRC, providing outstanding edge-holding capability, while the outer layers consist of steel with lower carbon content to enhance durability and resistance to impact. This blade design ensures exceptional durability and simple maintenance.

Clip Point profile blade, satin finish

The sleek blade, featuring a Clip-Point profile, measures 152 mm in length and 5 mm in thickness. Forged with a concave grind, it delivers exceptional cutting efficiency and enables precision in task execution. Thanks to the satin finish, the blade boasts a semi-matte sheen that enhances its visual appeal while also providing increased resistance to scratches during use. Designed with a shortened dull threshold (ricasso), the cutting edge is extended, allowing for an earlier and longer start to cutting.

Kray-Ex handle, Full Length Tang construction

Featuring a handle crafted from Kray-Ex material with aggressive texturing, the knife ensures a reliable grip, even when hands are wet or dirty. Boasting Full Length Tang construction, the tang of the blade runs the entire length of the handle, reaching its end while being slightly narrower than the handle itself. A cross guard is incorporated to prevent fingers from sliding onto the blade. Additionally, a hole is present in the handle for attaching a securing cord or lanyard.

Secure-Ex system sheath, multi-positional mount

The knife is accompanied by a sheath utilizing the Secure-Ex system, crafted from a lightweight and exceptionally durable material that offers high resistance to external conditions. Thanks to a precision-molded inlet and a buckle-secured loop, the scabbard holds the knife firmly in place, effectively minimizing the risk of accidental loss. The loop facilitates attachment to a belt, while multiple holes and eyelets provide versatile mounting options on a belt or other gear.

Secure-Ex feature
Secure-Ex
Secure-Ex is a system developed by Cold Steel, designed for the safe storage and convenient carrying of knives and tools. Sheaths made with this technology are lightweight, durable, and weather-resistant, making them suitable even for intensive use. They hold the knife securely in the sheath while allowing for quick and smooth draw. The system has a modular design - the sheaths can be supplemented with various fasteners, such as buckles, clips (e.g., C-Clip) or ball chains. This allows the knife to be worn on a belt, around the neck, or in other configurations, according to the user's preferences.
Kray-Ex feature
Kray-Ex
Kray-Ex is a synthetic polymer with a rubber-like structure used by Cold Steel to manufacture knife handles. It is characterized by high adhesion and anti-slip properties, ensuring a secure grip even in high humidity, low temperatures, and with dirty hands. The material is flexible and absorbs shocks well, which increases comfort of use. Kray-Ex is also resistant to cracking, abrasion, chemicals, and adverse weather conditions, making handles made of this material durable and virtually maintenance-free. Cold Steel uses it in tactical, survival, and utility knives.
San Mai feature
San Mai
San Mai (ja. "three layers") is a three-layer steel laminate developed by Cold Steel, combining a hard, high-carbon core with outer layers of stainless steel that offer high flexibility and corrosion resistance. The outer layers protect the core from damage, increase the blade's impact resistance, and facilitate maintenance. Depending on the generation, Cold Steel has used different core steels: VG-1 (San Mai III), containing 0.95-1.05% carbon and 13-15% chromium, characterized by good edge retention and rust resistance, and VG-10, enriched with molybdenum (0.9-1.2%) and vanadium (0.2-0.3%), which improves hardness, abrasion resistance, and edge retention. After proper heat treatment, the core reaches a hardness of 59-61 HRC. Products with a VG-1 San Mai core are manufactured in Japan in limited editions and are used in Cold Steel's most exclusive collector's fixed knives. VG-10 San Mai is produced in small series and is used exclusively in top-of-the-line collector's knives. San Mai is a registered trademark of Cold Steel.
Satin feature
Satin
Satin finishing is one of the most popular blade finishes, achieved by grinding the steel with fine-grained abrasives. Parallel micro-scratches remain on the surface, giving the knife a technical, matte appearance. Satin finishing has both aesthetic and practical significance - a smoothed blade is easier to clean, and the slightly reduced friction promotes smoother cutting. Depending on the direction and intensity of polishing, different effects are achieved - from a matte finish to an almost mirror-like finish. Satin is valued in both utility and collector's knives because it emphasizes the structure and quality of the steel while maintaining functionality.

I love the look of this knife as well as its sharpness, this steel is truly exceptional.

Moderate disappointment. That's how I would describe my opinion about this knife. From new, the cutting edge had a minor nick. OK. I'll fix it on the triangle. The false edge is basically sharpened to a fine point. It didn't bother me until I used it to strike sparks from a ferro rod. One pass on the ferro rod, which is really soft. The false edge got a small flaw. I take a magnifying glass, look, and am shocked. The edge melted/burnt with loss. I'm going back to 1095 carbon steel.

A knife worth paying a bit more for. The quality is really great, and of course that specific alloy of several hardnesses does the job. One of my favorite utility knives. I recommend it 100%.

Very good quality, fits securely in the hand.

I can honestly recommend! Equipment for years, very good quality steel, the handle provides a strong and secure grip. For a long time I was looking for a universal knife for long trips, one that would be handy but also comfortable for heavier tasks. SKR is perfect.

I recommend it, really solid equipment. I hesitated for a long time before buying it, but it was worth it.

Great survival knife for this price.

Unbreakable if you treat it like a knife and not like a crowbar. Batoning, heavier camp work, food preparation—it does what it should. Feels great in the hand. The steel holds an edge and doesn't chip. Sharpened on good stones or a sharpener, it shaves hair and cuts like crazy. One of my favorites. The sheath is very good and solid. The handle holds very well. Nothing has loosened in over half a year.

Beautifully crafted blade and the San Mai laminate adds class.

The knife isn't cheap, but the difference in the steel compared to the budget version is huge. A purchase for years to come.

One of the best store-bought knives you can have: large, very comfortable, and very well-made. It keeps its sharpness for a long time and the sheath provides many mounting options.
