Opinel 9 Carbon (carbon steel) is a workhorse - just like its stainless counterpart, Inox. Carbon is probably a bit easier to sharpen to a perfect edge, you just have to remember to wipe off moisture or other dirt. Great knife, solid, practical size. And a patinated, darkened carbon blade has its own unique charm!
Opinel No.9 Folding Knife - Carbon
A medium-sized, remarkably lightweight folding knife equipped with a 9 cm lockable blade. An iconic model from a French brand boasting over a century of heritage. The Clip Point blade utilizes high-carbon CX90 steel and features a semi-matte polish. A flat grind approaching zero-grind, together with the blade’s slender profile, delivers outstanding cutting efficiency.
Simple and reliable Virobloc locking mechanism
Once opened, the blade remains secured thanks to the Virobloc locking mechanism, a patented innovation from 1955. A steel collar encircles the handle at the pivot point of the blade. After deployment, rotating the ring a few degrees causes it to shield the slot in the handle designated for the blade, effectively immobilizing the blade during use. Additionally, the same mechanism ensures protection against unintentional opening when the knife is closed. A notch on the blade, much like those found on Victorinox pocket knives, facilitates easy blade deployment.
contoured beechwood handle
Crafted from beech wood, the handle features an ergonomically contoured design, ensuring a secure and warm hold. Notably, the handle is highly adaptable for customization. The most straightforward modification involves drilling a hole at the end to attach a safety lanyard. Users also have the option to personalize with unique textures, carve designs, or stain the wood in any preferred color.

Opinel is a French knife brand whose history dates back to 1890 in Savoy. The founder, Joseph Opinel, created the first folding knife, No. 08, which quickly became a symbol of everyday use thanks to its simplicity and functionality. In 1955, the Virobloc locking system was introduced, later modernized, which is still the hallmark of the brand today. In 1985, Opinel was recognized by the Victoria and Albert Museum as one of the 100 best-designed objects in the world, and the brand's knives also found their way into the MoMA collection in New York. Production takes place in Chambery, with an emphasis on quality and ecology - the wood comes from French forests and the waste is used to heat the factory. Among the famous users was Pablo Picasso, who used Opinel for carving, and the knives themselves have become a symbol of simplicity, durability, and the French lifestyle.

Super knife for those who value tradition. Old-school EDC. I ordered another one. My brother liked it so much that I ordered an identical one for him. Store execution again under 24 hours, which confirms excellent logistics organization. I recommend the store when you need something right away.

Solid, timeless product. The store processed the order express fast. Ordered in the evening, in the parcel locker the next day around 1:00 PM. The organization of work and logistics is admirable. The knife comes packed in the original plastic blister, at least that was the case for me. Highly recommend the purchase. The price is not overwhelming, and it will serve for years.

Very good knife. I knew what I was getting into when buying it because I already own 8—both stainless and carbon steel. The No. 9 is maybe a bit less handy to carry, but it’s more convenient in use. My piece has been very sharp and nicely lubricated since new, so the lock works perfectly. I honestly recommend Opinels—they're not only good knives but also a piece of history.

Bought as a gift, with engraving. Beautiful, light, and has that something that distinguishes Opinel from every other brand. Comes very sharp. Definitely recommend!
-
A cool cutter like all Opinels. Simple, functional, elegant. Advice for Ms. Ola: I recommend drying it well and dropping some rapeseed oil at the base of the blade 'hinge' for impregnation.
-
A knife of ideal size. Very sharp, fits perfectly in the hand. The lock works very smoothly and securely.
-
Great reviews, so I bought it for hiking. Maybe it's not for women, or I have to tweak it somehow, because I open it with pliers—there's no other way, and I can't even turn the ring with pliers. The knife is excellent—maybe it's just me? Or maybe you know if I can soak it in spirit to loosen it up, since that works everywhere.
-
Very sharp and thin (great for kitchen or grill). Ideal for modifications. The blade quickly develops a patina, and the handle can be carved and modified as you wish.
-
The most optimal Opinel size, of course carbon. Sharp, mine already has spots. Recommend.
-
Opinel as always, not much to say— just a great little knife for a very low price.
-
No. 9. Very sharp, fits the hand well. I recommend it.

Sharp as a razor, it's sensational.

First time I have an Opinel. Very light, very handy knife, sharpened to a razor on rods :) It's really frighteningly sharp.
