After an initial test, I found that the absolute thermal minimum for this product is 0°C. Assuming you’re dressed in city clothes, like jeans, a t-shirt, and a jacket, and want to rely only on this cocoon, it’s better not to go below zero with it. Even a light frost will require an extra layer under the jacket, and it’s best then to get a sleeping bag, blanket or quilt. The packed size (uncompressed) of the product together with a hammock is 40cm in height and about 35cm in diameter. This requires a large backpack – especially if you add a tarp to the set. For this reason, I’ll probably use the cocoon when the outside temperature is above zero, which eliminates the need to carry extra gear to stay warm. The cocoon with a hammock and possibly a tarp is fine. In other situations, I’ll rely on a bivvy and sleeping bag, which don’t take up so much space. A few more notes – when you’re closed inside the cocoon, there’s still plenty of space. You can move your arms freely. Nothing presses on your shoulders. Overall, it’s good quality equipment and useful within the right temperature range, but the size is considerable. But that’s how it is with hammock sets. If you want to be warm and dry, besides the hammock, you need to take a lot of other things with you. There’s no way around it. That’s why I prefer a bivvy, but sometimes I like to lazily sway among the trees, and for that I need this cocoon.
