William Coffin Coleman started out servicing gas lamps for businesses in Oklahoma Territory. In 1902, he manufactured his first proprietary lantern, the Advanced Lamp, which lit stores and offices. The turning point came in 1914, when Coleman introduced the Camp Stove, which became the standard camp kitchen setup for everyone from Boy Scouts to the U.S. Army during World War II. Today, Coleman — under the ownership of Newell Brands — produces a full ecosystem of camping products: tents, sleeping bags, air mattresses, coolers, stoves, cookware, and outdoor electronics.
