Edelrid is one of the oldest and most respected brands in climbing history, founded in 1863 by Julius Edelmann and Carl Ridder in Isny im Allgäu, Bavaria (the name "Edelrid" derives from Edelmann + Ridder). The company is a pioneer in climbing rope technology: in 1953, Edelrid developed the world's first kernmantle rope — featuring a load-bearing core and a protective sheath — which became the industry standard adopted by every rope manufacturer to this day. For over 160 years, Edelrid has been manufacturing ropes, harnesses, carabiners, and other protection equipment in Germany, with a strong focus on innovation, safety, and sustainable production.
160 Years of History and Breakthrough Innovation
Edelrid started as a manufacturer of cords and webbing, drawn into climbing by wartime demand for durable mountain ropes. In 1953, the company developed the first kernmantle rope: a core of parallel nylon fibers providing tensile strength, wrapped in a tough sheath for abrasion resistance. This invention replaced traditional twisted ropes and revolutionized belay technique. In 1964, Edelrid advanced the dynamic rope to withstand multiple falls, and by 1977 the twin rope technique had become an industry standard. Today the company is part of the VAUDE Group and manufactures bluesign-certified ropes in Germany — the first in the industry to achieve an environmentally certified production process.
Dynamic and Static Ropes
Edelrid's core products are dynamic climbing ropes: single (8.5–10 mm), half (7.5–9 mm), and twin (7–8 mm), available in a range of lengths (40–80 m) and colors. All ropes meet UIAA and EN 892 standards and feature moisture-resistance technologies (Dry, Pro Dry). The lineup is complemented by static ropes for caving, rope access, and rescue rigging, certified to EN 1891.
Harnesses, Carabiners, and Belay Equipment
Edelrid also offers sit harnesses and full-body harnesses, carabiners in a variety of shapes and sizes, belay devices including the Giga Jul and Jul, climbing pitons, lanyards, and other components for protection systems. Edelrid products stand out through the combination of German engineering and a sustainability-driven philosophy — the company was the first to develop a rope made entirely from recycled materials.
