KEY-BAK is an American company founded in 1948 in Pasadena, California, widely recognized as the inventor and pioneer of the retractable key reel and badge holder market. The brand's story begins with W.R. Lummis — a switchman on the Pacific Electric Railway in Los Angeles, who, after witnessing accidents caused by snagging key chains, designed the world's first retractable key reel with a metal spring-loaded retracting mechanism. That simple yet ingenious solution revolutionized the way keys are carried by workers across the industrial, transportation, uniformed services, and healthcare sectors worldwide.

History and Invention

As a railroad switchman, Lummis witnessed far too many accidents involving workers whose key chains and keys caught on moving parts of railcars. He engineered a device that would keep keys secured at the belt while allowing them to be freely extended for use and automatically retracted upon release. He initially sold the first KEY-BAK reels to fellow railroad workers and locksmiths in the greater Los Angeles area — word spread quickly, and Lummis was soon able to dedicate himself to production full-time. The company's location near CalTech and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratories in Pasadena provided access to cutting-edge technology, which drove rapid refinement of the mechanism. In 1981, KEY-BAK introduced another breakthrough: the MINI-BAK® — the world's first retractable badge holder, a product that remains the industry standard to this day. The company manufactures in Ontario, California, and is one of the few employee-owned firms in the segment.

Products and Technology

The KEY-BAK lineup today spans several product lines. The Original series is the flagship metal key reel featuring a steel spring mechanism with a retracting stainless steel chain (24" option) or Kevlar® DuPont fiber cord (up to 48" in Heavy Duty and Xtreme Duty versions). Available configurations include belt clip, belt loop, swivel clip, and leather duty belt loop. The SUPER48 Plus series is an advanced key reel with an ambidextrous ball-locking position feature, allowing use on either side of the belt. The Mini-Bak is a compact polycarbonate badge reel with a triple-layer nylon cord, built to withstand years of daily use. The Sidekick series is a versatile holder that combines a key reel with a badge holder. The Kevlar® cord offers a minimum breaking strength of 80 lbs, making KEY-BAK reels resistant to theft and accidental pull-off.

Users and Applications

KEY-BAK products are standard-issue gear for uniformed service personnel (law enforcement, fire departments, security), healthcare workers (nurses and physicians carrying ID badges), construction workers, and industrial technicians, as well as railroad, aviation, and port employees. Military personnel and shooters value KEY-BAK reels for their tactical functionality: keys always within reach, with no risk of loss or snagging. Every model incorporates corrosion-resistant stainless steel components, and wide split ring openings make adding and removing keys quick and effortless.
