Primus is a Swedish stove and outdoor cookware brand headquartered in Stockholm, with an unbroken production run since 1892 — building field kitchen equipment for explorers, trekkers, and anyone who cooks in the backcountry. The company was founded by F.W. Lindqvist and J.V. Svenson, who in 1892 built the world's first smokeless kerosene stove in their small blacksmith workshop and named it Primus — Latin for "first." The name proved prophetic: over the following decades, Primus became a global byword for the camp stove, with its products accompanying legendary expeditions including those of Amundsen and Hillary on Mount Everest.

History and Milestones

As early as 1897, a Primus stove accompanied the Andrée Arctic Expedition to the North Pole — one of the first documented polar expeditions to rely on the equipment. In 1908, a manufacturing facility opened on the island of Lilla Essingen in Stockholm. During the 1930s and 1950s, the company developed its own LPG stoves and camping lanterns. In 1994, a production plant opened in Tartu, Estonia, which today manufactures the vast majority of Primus stoves while maintaining the European "Made in Europe" standard. In 1996, the Multi-Fuel system debuted — the first outdoor stove capable of running on multiple fuel types, from LPG and white gas to kerosene and aviation fuel. The company is now part of the Silva Group.

Technology and Innovation

Primus continuously advances camp stove technology. The PrimeTech system (2006) doubled combustion efficiency compared to conventional stoves. The OmniLite Ti (2011) — an award-winning multi-fuel stove with a titanium construction — set a new benchmark for lightweight versatility. Every Primus stove is test-fired at the factory before shipping, and replacement parts remain available worldwide for years after purchase — a philosophy built around longevity, not disposability. Primus stoves are designed in Stockholm, where rigorous R&D lab testing precedes every production run.

Sustainability

Primus has been committed to environmental responsibility since 1978 — the company was among the first to develop burners that reduce firewood consumption in Africa. Today the brand supports renewable energy projects certified by Gold Standard, uses recycled and recyclable materials, and designs products built to be repaired — on the principle that the best gear is gear that never ends up in a landfill after a few seasons.

Product Range

The Primus lineup covers gas stoves — from ultra-compact pocket models to integrated cooking systems with stove and pot combined (Eta pots) — through to multi-fuel stoves. Complementing them are gas canisters, vacuum flasks and bottles, camp cookware and cutlery, pots, and cooking sets. Every category offers models across a range of weight classes and price points — from kit for weekend trekkers to equipment for high-altitude mountaineers.
