Compasses

Compasses are basic devices used to determine position and direction of movement. The principle of compass operation is based on the use of the phenomenon of alignment of a freely suspended magnet, along the lines of a magnetic field. In the case of a compass, we are dealing with a magnetic needle set on an axis inside a case with an angular scale - a wind rose. These are useful navigational tools for trekking or survivalist activities. Moreover, military compasses are an important support during military operations.

Compasses come in two distinctive designs - open and cased. Open compasses are map-dedicated designs, the base of which is equipped with many useful features such as a magnifying glass, scale, ruler or even holes for drawing markings on the map. A cased compass is a lockable design, usually made of metal. Cased designs are often equipped with a bearing function, which is used by means of a bow tie and a pinkie. In addition, a scale and ruler are most often placed on the side of the case.
