Bicycles are a popular means of transportation, but unfortunately they are also a frequent target of thieves. Bicycle theft can lead to significant financial losses and result in the loss of a valuable unicycle. To minimize this risk, there are several precautions you can take. As an owner, it is important to consider how to secure your bicycle against theft.
In this guide, we'll discuss what types of bike security are available and give you tips on how to secure your bike to minimize the risk of theft.
Which bike lock is best?
So how do you secure your bike against theft? It is worth choosing a good quality security device that will be difficult for a thief to break through. There are many different bicycle fasteners available on the market, such as:
-
U-Lock,
-
folding fasteners,
-
links,
-
padlocked chains,
-
Frame Lock.
Which one to choose? Choosing the right security device should be tailored to your individual needs. If you will be leaving your bicycle in public places, it is worth choosing a security device that will be very difficult for a thief to remove. And if you store your bike, for example, in a garage or other hard-to-reach place, you can use a less complicated fastener.
With so many models of bicycle fasteners available on the market, it can be difficult to decide which one to choose. However, regardless of the model you choose, a good bicycle safety device should have a few key features.

What kind of bike fastener to choose?
If you don't know what kind of safety device to choose for your bicycle, we'll cover the different types of safety devices later in this guide so you can decide which one is best for you.
U-Lock bike lock
A typical U-Lock is usually made of tough, hardened steel, which provides a high level of security and resistance to theft attempts. The curved bar with which the lock wraps around the bike is often covered with rubber lagging to protect the bike frame from damage.
U-Lock is a fastener that, with its weight and massive appearance, can deter thieves from stealing. Many are looking for easy and quick bargains, so when they see the solid design of a U-Lock, they often decide to look for another target. Although u-locks are considered one of the most effective security devices, they are not without their drawbacks. They are massive and thus weigh a lot, and their shape makes them unwieldy. Many cyclists carry this type of security device in a backpack or pannier so that it doesn't get in the way while riding.
There are different sizes of U-Locks on the market, which will allow you to choose the right one for the place where you usually fasten your bike and fit it to the frame. When buying this type of fastener, pay attention to the quality of the lock and the thickness of the bar, which should start at 12 mm.

Chain with padlock for bicycle
A chain made of durable steel is an effective protection for our bicycle. Different lengths of chains are available on the market. Both long chains and shorter versions are on sale. Cutting the chain poses a difficult challenge for potential thieves, who must use a special large tool such as scissors.
It is worth remembering, however, that these types of fasteners often carry a lot of weight. This can be a handicap for some cyclists, especially if it is necessary to carry such a lock along with other bicycle accessories or luggage. What's more, the high weight of the lock can affect the comfort of the ride, which can be a handicap for cyclists who appreciate lightness and freedom when moving around on their bicycles. Many bicycle manufacturers equip fasteners with nylon chain guards, which protect the bike from scratches when using the lock.
Folding bike lock
The folding clasp is an increasingly popular choice among many cyclists. It consists of a string of metal panels connected by hardened rivets, which allow you to easily fasten your bike to a post or other elements by the roadside. These fasteners are very easy to install and can be installed virtually anywhere on the frame. Such locks are characterized by being made of hardened steel, which makes them highly resistant to various attempts at forcing, such as drilling, undermining, cutting or sawing.
Folding bike safety devices are very difficult to cut. They win in terms of weight and size over other fasteners, as they are lighter and take up little space when folded. As a result, they can easily be stowed in a backpack or bag that is attached to the bike.

Classic clasp in the form of a cable
A cable-type fastener is usually made of very tightly braided steel. When choosing a security device in the form of a rope, it is important to remember that it is to some extent a deterrent, and not a full-fledged mechanism for securing a bicycle against theft. To quickly deal with such security, thieves need only a strong cutting tool.
Installing the cable is easy, and removing it requires no specialized tools or skills. The cable is also lightweight and takes up little space, making it easy to carry in a pocket or bike pannier.
Frame Lock - a lock for the rear wheel of a bicycle
Frame Lock is a type of bicycle lock that, once installed, becomes a permanent part of the frame and works by locking the rear wheel. This lock is shaped like a horseshoe and is very popular in Europe, especially in the Netherlands and Denmark, where it is considered an essential component of an urban bicycle. It works by locking the rear wheel by inserting a metal bar between the spokes. Sometimes you can also meet other names for this type of lock, such as "Ring Lock".
This type of lock is great for securing a bicycle for a short period of time, for example, while shopping, when we need to leave the bike outside. Frame Lock is easy to use, but it does not lock the entire bike, for this reason it is recommended to use it in combination with another type of lock, such as a chain.
The best models of bicycle wheel locks are equipped with the function of integration with additional security in the form of a chain or cable. They have special holes in the housing that allow the insertion of the end of the chain or cable, which increases the level of security of the bicycle.
How to properly strap a bicycle?
The right fastener for a bicycle is half the battle in ensuring its safety. However, even the best fastener will not guarantee 100% protection if we do not follow a few basic rules. First of all, you should fasten your bike by the frame and by at least one wheel. Never pin the bike only by the wheel, as this makes it much easier to steal. It is important not to pin the bike by components such as the spokes, chain, seat tube or brake cables.
For mountain bikes, it is best to pin the bike by the frame and rear wheel, but the pinning method should be adapted to the shape of the frame for optimal security. For city bikes, which often have additional rear wheel security, it is better to pin the frame together with the front wheel.
Do not pin the bike to objects that are not firmly attached to the ground and solid. The best solution is "sheffield" type stands. In the absence of such a rack in the vicinity, it is worth looking for other places, such as grates, lampposts, poles, structural elements of buildings, billboard poles and even railings of bridges and overpasses. However, make sure that the chosen element is sturdy enough and well fixed to the ground.
Avoid attaching your bicycle to traffic sign posts, as they are often poorly attached to the ground and easy to remove.

If you are concerned about increasing the safety of your bicycle, you should consider having it marked. Marking a bicycle with the police is a simple process. To get your bike marked, take your bicycle, ID and proof of purchase (receipt, invoice or purchase contract) with you and go to the nearest police station. Marking is intended to make it easier to identify the bicycle in the event of theft and significantly increases the chance of recovering the stolen vehicle.
