Gun scope maintenance - step by step

Gun scope maintenance - step by step

A spotting scope is a high-precision optical device that is commonly used for sport and recreational shooting, but also by uniformed services. Like any optical device, rifle scopes require proper maintenance so that they retain their properties and serve without fail for many years. The spotting scope is equipped with delicate optical glass, which is easily damaged if cleaned and maintained with the wrong products.

In this article, we will give you some tips on how to clean the optical glass and body of your shooting scope. We will also give you tips on how often you should carry out these operations.

Gun scope maintenance - where to start?

Maintenance should start with cleaning the glass elements of the telescope, i.e. the lenses. To do this, use a soft and clean cloth, such as microfibre, and optics cleaners. To remove solid dirt, use special rags, brushes and specialised fluids. Compressed air is best for removing dust, but it should not be the spray air used to remove dirt from consumer electronics or computers. Compressed air for cleaning optics should be dry and degreased.

The next step is to clean the scope body, which can be done regularly after each use.

How to thoroughly clean the lenses of an optical sight? - step-by-step instructions

Keeping the lenses of an optical sight in good condition is key to ensuring their longevity. Proper cleaning not only improves image quality, but also prevents damage that can result from dirt or debris build-up. To effectively and safely clean your lenses, follow the steps below:

1. Remove the glass covers from the eyepiece and lens.

2. Blow both components with dry compressed air to remove dust, small grains of sand, etc. You can replace the compressed air with an anti-static cloth.

3. Use a brush or special lens cleaner to clean any solid dirt not removed by compressed air.

5. Leave the scope in a dry and warm place (at room temperature) for a while to evaporate any residual liquid.

Attention!

  • Do not place the telescope on a cooker or heater.
  • Do not wipe the glass ‘quickly’ with a scrap of shirt or tissue. This may damage the anti-reflective coatings.
  • Avoid contact between your lenses and sweat, which can also significantly damage their coatings.
  • Do not clean lenses with ordinary water, even boiled water. Once evaporated, it will leave a residue that is very difficult to remove.

How do I clean the body of a spotting scope?

The body of the scope can be cleaned regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, for example. This material effectively removes any dirt such as dust, fingerprints or greasy smudges without causing micro scratches.

How often should I clean my rifle scope?

How often a scope should be cleaned is an individual matter and depends on the intensity of its use and the environmental conditions. It is a good idea to check the scope for dirt after each field trip.

Lenses, if properly protected, can be cleaned less frequently - even once every six months. The body of the scope, on the other hand, should be cleaned regularly due to frequent hand contact.

How do I store my rifle scope?

Avoid storing the scope in hot and humid places. We also recommend that it is transported in a protective case. Do not leave it in a place exposed to intense sunlight. This can damage the lenses and cause the so-called burning glass effect.
