Vibram Sole — What is it and What are its Types?
The Vibram sole is a specialized rubber sole developed by the Italian company Vibram. It is designed for high grip, durability, and safety. It is used primarily in trekking, mountain, and outdoor footwear, but also in urban or work models.
The history of Vibram dates back to the 1930s and is directly related to mountaineering. The founder of the company was the Italian climber Vitale Bramani, who was looking for a safer alternative to the leather soles with nails used at the time. The impetus for action was a tragic expedition in 1935 in the Alps, during which several of his companions died, and its course highlighted the problems associated with the insufficient grip of that era's footwear. Bramani decided to develop a sole that could improve user safety.
The result of this work was the first Vibram sole presented in 1937 – the Carrarmato model. It was made of vulcanized rubber and was distinguished by a deep, aggressive tread that improved grip in difficult terrain.
In the following decades, Vibram consistently developed its technologies. The company began creating different rubber compounds tailored to specific conditions — different for rocks, different for snow, and yet others for everyday use. The most frequently mentioned disadvantages of the Vibram sole include the slightly heavier weight of some models, which may be felt during long marches, especially with fast and dynamic movement in the field. Additionally, footwear equipped with this type of sole is usually more expensive compared to simpler constructions, which is due to the technologies used and the quality of the materials used.
